i have an 84 sun tracker 24' rated for a 115hp even though it came with a 75. I thought about just working on getting a big 200+ for it. what do i need to beef up on it in order to get it on and not destroy the boat???

thanks

Easiest and safest would be add a third toon with a motor mount

IMO your asking for more trouble than a performance increase. Your dealing with overpowering way over and above BIA limit. Your risking injury to you and your guest, and depending on your lake law enforcement you could be fined and banned from lake. You also may have a hard time finding insurance and getting them to pay for any damage.

We had a few guys here add 3rd toons, I hope they jump and help out, but there is a few out there or find a used pontoon the same size and take to a welder for a transom add on.

And come on Lake, help him spend his money.

Yup,

a 3rd toon would increase the hp rating too.

I say go for it! I'd like to increase the hp on my little 18ft. as well.

you thinking 4 stroke or 2?

If you look at those who have done this I think you will see their rating only increased less than a hundred. IMO putting that much power on toon that old is asking for trouble. If your intent on doing this please get with your states lake patrol and get their take.

A 84 model toon has small logs, no lifting strakes and logs that are much thinner than a performance toon built today.

Herb I think ones life is more important that speed. IMO if he wants faster he needs to get a newer model toon that can take that kind of stress.

Now if he wanted to go up to say 150 by adding a 3rd log then I would say go for it

What you need is to get your insurance company to agree to it or your liability is severe.

I think there is more to it than just adding a 3rd toon. The mount that the motor is on has to be reinforced for the extra hp, and I think the either the mfg or the Coast Guard has to verify in writing that the vessel is compliant with safety laws at that HP.

Sorry I missed the year, yep them will be small toons, be cheaper to sale that one and get a newer one then, I just figured a 24 should have 23 inch toons on it.

I have an 84 Tracker 24' Buggy that had a Nissan 70 on when we got it.. We could get about 14-15 when full of fuel and 4 or 5 people.
I added an 82 Evinrude 115 That I got for free. (long story involving bought a boat with 115, swapped motors, sold new boat for more, etc.. LOL)
Now full of fuel (18 gallons) with 6-8 people on board, we get about 25 mph. Pulling a tube with 2 or 3 kids, and 3 or 4 adults in boat, we get about 22.5. (all speeds are GPS) Cruising around at 25 is awesome... You can back off the throttle to save fuel, and cruise about 18-20 all day long... If I am able to find a 3rd log, I might go up to a 150.. But I'm plenty happy with the 115.
If speed is yout utmost concern, I do suggest buying a newer toon, with bigger motor. But the 115 will push your boat plenty fast.
I am sure that skinning, and possibly adding some strakes would get me a few more mph..
As with anything involving motors, and movement, speed costs money.. How fast do you want to go? :)

that is great info...the range your talking is one i can live with...looks like the 115 will get me into the range where i want to be. i was wanting to be like mid 20s. i know if i want performance i am going to be looking at a newer board i can do lifting strakes to get this school bus out of the water...i just want a little power to get ahead of a storm if needed.

if you want all that speed why not sell the toon to somebody that wants it for what it was made for? and then buy a speed boat? or buy a deck boat and have both boats in one.....
