Anyone know how to install a tach on a Mariner 45 horse. I would like to do this to see if I have the right prop etc.

Well I really can not help but my 75hp has wire leads (spares) if I ever wanted to hook up a oil pressure gage and stuff like that. I would see if you can get your hands on a wire print on that motor to see what leads to hook up maybe West Marine?

I have the SenDec tach/hour meter much like the one rick described above. It also has an hour meter which helps with usage and maintence intervals.
Installation is simple. You simply use a 14 guage wire around one of the spark plug wires and the meter counts them to figure the RPM. I had to get my own 14 guage wire as the one provided wasn't long enough to run up to the dash.
Here is how you wrap the sensor wire around the spark plug wire.
