Water seperator/fuel filter
One of my winter projects is to install a good water separator/fuel filter. What do you recommend ?
( I did search, but didn't really find what I was looking for)
Thanks !

Re: Water seperator/fuel filter
I also put one on last year from Overtons, the one I got can actually use a Mercury filter too, don't need to order from Overtons and will probably be around for some time.
My question is, these filters look nothing different from an oil filter, are they? Also does anyone actually know how these work, seems to me fuel pumped in with water under pressure would get pumped right out??? What am I missing? So far everyone on any forum that spoke of them says "they've never had water in the filter", which makes me say hmmmm. Although, how the hell do you tell, besides I know dumping it out, and the water seperates right?? Although last season I did dump it out and the gas that came out did look faily dirty.
Which leads to me last question, do most of you replace the filter every year or every other?
Exuse some of my ignorance, if I knew it all, I wouldn't be here........I'd be kicked back on a beach having a few of these

Re: Water seperator/fuel filter
I changed mine year before for the first time in 4 years. I was curious what was in it also. I got very little water but a but load of grit. After leaving it upside down to drain and getting new one the old was considerably heaver than new, I also bought replacement at my Merc dealer.

Re: Water seperator/fuel filter
I use a Racor filter on mine....it has a clear plastic bowl on the bottom that holds water(which you can see) and has a drain. It basically with the help of a paper filter element slows and filters the fuel flow enough for heavier water to separate and go to the bottom. With the bs ethanol in fuel today I'd rather not run a boat without a separator. Most get changed once a year with your annual service. If alot of water is found at that time I would change it more. Remember it only holds so much water then once its full it will pass water into the engine= $$$$. You can find racor filters at most marine retail and/or repair shops.

Re: Water seperator/fuel filter
I've emptied mine several times since getting the boat 2 years ago (200+ hours) and have found no water (unlike my diesel truck which accumulates ~1/2 oz per month). I did replace it last year as a simple precaution. It's a large blue Yamaha filter that came on the boat - http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/ac ... etail.aspx
I have a tester coming in the mail http://www.fuel-testers.com/index.html that I'll share the results later.

Re: Water seperator/fuel filter
I bought one of the kits for about 25 bucks from overtons a year and a half ago. I had problems on 2 separate occasions before the filter with water in the gas in one season. Since then, none. I removed the filter while winterizing this winter and did have what I thought was quite a bit of water in it. I repalced the filter then. For 25 bucks I thought it was a great investment. Plus it was easy to do.
