Introducing myself with a Sharkhide question

#1 Post by LSVLance » Fri Apr 30, 2010 11:02 am

First off, wanted to say howdy and mention that I've been reading here for a while ever since I began looking for a pontoon and now that I've picked one up and have begun tinkering with it, thought I better go ahead and register.

I bought a new 2009 Cypress Cay Cozumel 250 and had the dealer hang a 2008 Optimax 175 Pro XS on the back of it.

Here is what it looked like on the lot, and on the way home...

As you can tell, it's been sitting on the lot for over a year and actually spent a bit of time last year in the water as well as a demo. I think the dealer used some sort of acid cleaner to clean the toons back up a bit and while it got the heavy stuff off, it also etched the aluminum and left water marks on them as well.

While I got a GREAT deal on the boat I just couldn't handle having my brand new boat looking like that. So I read up a bit on machine polishing and Sharkhide treating then got busy.

Here's a couple once finished with the polishing

I only polished the insides on the first section, I want the boat to look nice, but I ain't crazy either... :P

Last night I wiped the Toons completely down with lacquer thinner (twice) and tonight I'm applying my first coat of Sharkhide. I've purchased 6 cotton baby diapers and have watched the videos...so I think I'm ready to roll.

My question is, how long should I wait before putting a second coat on and then how long should it dry before putting it in the water?

Also, will one quart go far enough to do two coats on both the insides and outsides of the 25' toons?

The boat will sit on a lift at my local lake during the summer, so I hope for the coating to last a good long time (several years) and I'm sure it'll be one of the best looking Toons up there. Can't wait to get it out and start using it.

Sorry for the book, I tend to be a little bit long winded at times.... :biggrin2

The can doesn't say anything about a second coat...I seem to remember something was said in one of the videos I watched about applying a second coat, just to make sure you didn't miss any spots.

The can also doesn't say anything about coverage area.

If nobody else can help with what they experienced, I'll give Clint a call. Hate to bother him with a not quite so important type of question if I don't have to.

Thanks,
Lance

I think you will be really close at 25 foot, I had maybe 1/4" left on 22 foot toons and I only did the outside and what I could reach of the inside on the ends.

Cure time between coats depends on, temp and humidity. Could be any where from 3 hours to 24, I personally waited 24 hours inbetween coats.

Before you apply it read the FAQ section of the sharkhide website, it will answer alot of the questions you have now and will have as you start to apply the product. http://www.sharkhide.com/mpfaq.html

It really is a great product you will be extremely pleased when you're done.

Good work, toons look good!

Thanks... I read the questions again (it had been a while).

Looks like I'll have to decide between doing two coats on the outsides first then use what's left on the insides...or chancing that it'll stretch to two coats on all of it.

How many of you on here apply sharkhide to the insides of your Toons anyway? Or is that taking my OCD just a bit too far? :happy

Thanks... We must be about the same age then...which is a relief to me as I'm a bit worried that I'm too young to be going from a Malibu Wakeboard boat to a Pontoon boat...

But I'm pretty certain that we'll get a LOT more use out of the pontoon than we did the Malibu.

Plus, I put a big enough engine on the back of the 'toon that if I really feel the need to get out oon the end of the rope again, that shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, it's a product that when applied keeps aluminum shiny as the day the logs were polished. For below the waterline however, Sharkhide doesn't protect below the waterline. For that you'll need anti-fouling paint.
