My new to me boat ( 2008 Party Barge Regency 22 foot Sun Tracker with the performance logs) this weekend hit 16-17 MPH tops t 5100 RPM. It has the optimax 90. Is this normal? Not that I NEED to go faster, but it would be nice....

That sounds slow for a 90 hp. How many people did you have on it and what were the weather conditions like. I would guess you should be hitting 23-26 mph.

What kind of prop are you running? That motor should have a max RPM of 5750 when propped for you boat proper.

That is way too slow. The performance strakes don't start to plane untill you reach 19-20 mph. From that point on, the speed picks up rapidly. If you bought the boat new, I would take it back and tell them you'll take it when it's propped right. You should run at least 30.

We don't have exactly the same boat but I agree with Brumby...that seems quite slow. My performance is similar to his, on plane about 20 mph. Have you worked with the trim to get the boat on plane? I get 32 MPH with four adults on board, 3/4 tank of gas, ice chest, anchors etc, but the trim has to be set correctly to make this happen. Get a good GPS to verify your speeds, work with the trim and verify what prop specification you have. My boat was equipped with a 13.25 by 17. Your prop will likely have either a part number or the specs stamped on it.

Hope you get it worked out!

That is about what I get w/ my 60hp.

Seems alittle slow to me as well. Did you play with your trim to find the sweet spot? ( cant believe I just said that ) My toon is a bit smaller ( 20 footer ) as is my motor ( Yamaha F-75 ) Last time I checked mine by GPS I was getting 23 to 24 mph. That was with 3 adults and small chop on the lake. Also my 2 adult passengers were sitting up front in fishing chairs.... They probably should have been sitting in the rear. I'm assuming had they been sitting further back, and if the lake had been alittle smoother, I probably would have gotten 25 to 26 mph.

somthins definatly not the way it should be runnin, i top at 22.6 under perfect conditions but regularly hit 21 at 5300-5400 and also run a 60hp but on a 24'

i'd give the guy ya bought it from a squawk and see if he'll help ya out

I wouldn't trust the Iphone app, I have compared them to my GPS in the truck and the boat and they don't hold a candle. Now that was a few months ago, maybe a new app has came out that is better, but not sure I would trust the iphone speedo app.

I agree with the above that's slow. I have a 22 ft with a 90 HP 4 stroke and get 23 to 26 MPH GPS with about the same load. I definitely would be sq-waking at the dealer, somethings not right! Could be a combination of motor height and prop! I get 16 MPH at 3500 to 3800 RPM's, depending on temp and water chop. :2cents

Regarding the iPhone apps, and assuming you have the 3GS, the product from Navionics called Lakes does a great job. I compared it to a handheld GPS and it was very accurate. You have to pay for it ($10) but I have been very pleased. I did try several other free or 1 or 2 buck apps and this is in a different class.

Just my 2 cents..

I have used several GPS apps on the Iphone and they all work to some degree but I agree the speed, direction, and depth info you get from Navionics is well worth the cost. I've seen 42 MPH once on a calm day and 3 people on board. You should be doing much better than 16 MPH??
