Oil Question

#1 Post by yrsfather » Fri Jun 04, 2010 7:50 pm

I recently bought a 2002 Crest Pontoon with a 2002, 2-stroke, 40hp Mercury Outboard. I have put approximately 19 hours on the engine, 20 gallons of gas and 1 1/2 quarts of oil. The oil reservoir was full when I picked up the boat. I am wondering if this typical for a 2-stroke engine or if it is burning too much oil? The engine seems to smoke a bit while reversing out of the dock, is this also typical? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Your runnig 50/1 so not to far off. My new E-Tec is using a gallon of oil a bit over a 100 gallons at 100/1

I have a 2005 Merc. 2 stroke 90hp. I filled the Oil resrvior completely full when we purchased the boat, last june. Since then, we've gone through approx. 3 tanks of gas since then (20 gal. tank) and we are a bit under the 1/2 full mark on the oil resrvoir. Long story short, I believe we're at 100/1 also. My 2 stroke smokes a bit the first time I start it on every outing.
