Help with speed

#1 Post by jbrown8988 » Sun Jun 20, 2010 7:40 pm

I have a 87 sylvan 24ft pontoon with a 60 HP Mercury with tilt/trim... what should my speed be at? It doesn't seem like the motor is running full rpms... what should the rpms be? 5,000? thanks for your time!

I would expect your speed to be in the high teens or low 20s. Is it a four stroke of two?
Maybe someone here knows for sure. but I would say if it is a two stoke the rpm should be somewhere in the mid 5,000 and a four stroke 5,500 to somewhere in the low 6,000s.

If it is a 2 stroke mer should be in around 5800. How does the motor sound. Sometimes that is a better indicator than a tach, especially one that may be giving you incorrect info. I have a smart gage which has a tach as one of its function an an analog tach in the dash. Although the boat is almost new they read up to 300 rpm different at times. Didn't know the 60 came with t&t. Learned something so that's good.
