Fuel guage incorrect - 1995 Hurricane Fundeck 196

#1 Post by herbvogt » Sat Jun 26, 2010 4:20 am

My 1995 Fundeck - 196R fuel gauge is not showing the correct fuel level. It shows around 5/8 when full. In addition - the needle bounces erratically when I'm driving the boat.

I tried to find the fuel tank to see if the wires were loose. I couldn't find a way (cover) through which I could see the fuel tank or wires - help / suggestions please.

remember when driveing and hitting waves your fuel is going to change as your fuel is sloshing around in the tank with means the float is also moving so while underway you wont have an acurate reading untill you stop in calm waters as for the miss reading it coiuld be the wires are corroded the float is old and just wont float like it use to. things of that nature how old is the float if you just replaced it is it the correct length.

When driving the boat the needle acts very erratically going very quickly back and forth from E to F. The float in my boat has never been changed in the 10 years I have owned it.
I don't know where to access the top of the fuel tank. l looked into all of the hatch covers I could find on the boat.

some times you have to remove the tank from the boat to access the float i bet there is a bad connection wither a coroded wire or a bad tirminal

Fuel gauge erratic needle behavior - I found that the wires that went to the positive battery post were not making good contact. After cleaning the connectors, the erratic behavior was nearly eliminated. I still have a problem with the fuel level. I filled the tank until it flowed over the filler tube and the gauge read 3/4 full.

I found the location of the fuel level unit in the boat. If you unscrew the round cap that is located behind the rear seat (on the walkway to the pop-up change room) at the rear of the boat, look towards the front of the boat and you can see the top of the fuel sending unit and the wires connected to it. You will need a flash light. Open the battery cover door to get more light under the deck. It is not easy to reach, but I was able to reach through the hole and put my hands on the wires - none were loose.

Bad sender unit, buy a universal one (made by Tempo). You need to remove the old one and measure it when you buy a new one.
