ok, heres what i got. 76 40hp evinrude....And heres the problem...I was out on the boat and and it started fine..but once i put it to wot it bogged down bad and dies? Its almost like it isnt getting enough gas..i cleaned the carb and put new float and needle in it. Do i have a fuel pump on this boat and where is it? Do you think my float is sticking? Its kind of weird because if im sitting there in neutral i can open the gas wide open and it wont die..but as soon as i take it out and put it in gear and give it gas it dies. Thanks for the help!! :donno

Did you replace the fuel filter?
Yes you do have a fuel pump, Not exactly sure where it is on your motor. Look for something like ->this<-. As old as your motor is, it's not a bad idea to rebuild or replace anyway. Your lucky they are so cheap compared to ones with the VROs.
One thing that happened to my 96 evinrude was a sensor magnet came loose. It would idle OK, but when you gave it some throttle would bog down. They are located under the fly wheel. Just something else to check.

my 60 did this and is now acting similar. i rebuilt the carbs. now 99% of the time she takes off great but sometimes dies in idle and when "floored" to plane. i believe my floats my be getting stuck every now and then. i'll eventualy get around to adjusting em a bit, but.. ya know how it is. sounds like a clogged high speed in your carb bud :biggrin2

on an older carbureted motor that dies when put to wot i'd check the choke first.

what about, electric push in on key style choke?
