Renaming a boat - bad luck?

Good evening guys. When I bought my pontoon, the first name of the lady who owned it was Betty. She had named the boat "Miss Betty" and had Betty Boop stickers and the name on both sides of the bow gate. (You can see them in the picture) I took the registeration numbers off and put the new numbers on the bow where they are supposed to be. That left the paint scratched in places. I plan to use a decal with my wife's name to cover that area. The dealer who sold me the boat took the stickers and the name off before I bought it. I want to rename the boat in honor of my wife, but I have been told that to rename a boat is bad luck. Now, I am not real superstitious, but, I figure there is no point in pushing my luck. What do you think? Rename or not? Thanks for your responses. :donno

Thanks for the link. I never realized there was that much involved in renaming a boat. I wonder if you can substitute sweet tea for champaign? Champaign, even in small amounts gives me a headache!

Official BMR christening/renaming ceremony.

Requirements:

1. Boat.
2. Captain.
3. First Mate (if ok with topless women, otherwise let her go shopping).
4. Topless women (King Neptune loves topless women).
5. Booze.
6. Your closest friends, preferably one that can drink and speak at the same time, we'll call him "MC".

Ceremony:
(MC): "We now call on the Captain to Christen the new Vessel"
(Captain): "I name this vessel (name of the boat)"
(1st mate or designated topless woman): "May Neptune Bless her and all who sail with her"
(1st mate or designated topless woman): "May Neptune keep all who sail her safe"
(everyone): "Amen"

Topless women frolic about. Everyone drinks.

(MC): "A Toast to the Captain"
(everyone): "Cheers" (or other toast)
(MC): "A Toast to the (1st mate or designated topless woman) " . Usually, the larger breasted of the bunch.
(everyone): "Cheers!" (or other toast)
(MC): "A Toast to (name of the boat)"

Topless women frolic about. Everyone drinks.

(Captain): "A toast to everyone present! Thank you for coming today and in joining us in this very specially occasion!" Fairwinds to all!
(everyone): "Cheers!" (or other toast).

Topless women frolic about. Everyone continues to drink.

(Captain then takes his boat for a cruise for the first time, it is usually best that the Captain takes her out single handed, or with the topless women).

End of ceremony!

Do this and your vessel shall forever see fair winds and calm seas. :drink4 :thumbsup

I believe if you buy a boat used, as the new owner, you are allowed to rename the boat. Its only bad luck if YOU name it twice.

Either way, BMR's way will certainly appease the Toon God's! :nana

With BMR's ceremony/instructions, I have a prediction to make....

All who read those instructions will rename their boats several times each summer! Maybe even a few times each weekend. :biggrin2

What if you named it after your ex-wife but could not afford to buy another one for the new wife? :biggrin2
