Added oil to the gas tank and now will not run!!!

Out on the water and I mixed some gas/oil. Then thought I'd pour a few ounces of oil in the gas tank like an idiot. Didn't want to have too little oil.

Engine started and ran for about one minute, then died and wouldn''t start. New plugs didn't fix it. Plugs smelled more like clean oil than gas. I poured premix into a cylinder and engine fired for a second. Figuring the oil is blocking the fuel somehow. Ideas?

Engine is a 35HP Evinrude from 1984. You guys think I just need to pull the gas lines off and blow them out? Or does the fuel filter/ system need attention? Any insight is appreciated.

This was a good learning experience for getting towed and swimming the boat to the ramp. :lol3

Your motor uses a 50/01 oil to gas ratio. That should be 16oz per 6 gallons of gas. Sounds like you added to much oil. Dump the gas and start fresh

probably will need to clean the fuel lines. the reason it ran for a minute or so was it was burning the untouched gas in the line until it hit you mix. not sure but would not hurt to install a new filter.

I'm not understanding your explanation. How much "extra" oil did you add?
If you only added a few ounces extra then that would NOT cause your engine to "all of a sudden" not start. Just adding a few ounces of oil wouldn't even cause the plugs to foul. I suspect you have some other issue with fuel delivery, ie carburetors.

2-3 ounces tops. Might not jack with it tonight, I'm so worn out from this long week.

That little of extra oil shouldn't cause it not to run. During new engine breakin you run alot richer on the oil than that.

Yep...too little oil = a problem. Too much, rarely causes any issues.

Is it possible you poured the oil in and didn't mix it? and then started motor only to pull mostly oil through carbs. You did say they were oily

Yea, I didn't mix it. Big mistake.

I pulled the fuel filter off while on the water and think I lost a seal. I can't get the filter to seal right now. Tried to fire the motor tonight and the gas tank was empty. I had just filled it before it quit working. So the gas has leaked out. Maybe there was a siphon and it all leaked out the filter seal.

Got to find a good marine parts store around here. Anyone local have suggestions?

Tried to get it running today with no luck. My dealer was out of stock for the engine repair manual. Anyone got advice for how to clean the carbs? Looks like they are near the crank end and under the flywheel. Bit intimidating without a repair manual. I can't even tell where the exhaust and air intake are on the engine still. LOL Any help is appreciated forum, love you guys.

Check with your local library, they probably have a Seloc manual available.
