Not the way I wanted to end the summer

#1 Post by curtiscapk » Tue Sep 07, 2010 9:51 am

Toon running best ever on Saturday! I didn't have time to check for water in toons, so just went out. I did have issues with reverse unloading but thought I'll look at it later. 18 miles an hour, 8 people three huge coolers! :nana I was like I am finally getting closer. And then riding in 35 feet of water directly over river channel and chunk clankity clank clank. :x :x   Nothing I could idle or just a little more for 2.5 mph. Good thing my BIL checked his phone. I had two people just turn right around when they say me waving bastards!

I didn't even want to start tearing into the lower unit to pissed. NO damager to skeg or prop at all!
So Sunday we 4 wheelered to the lake and met my Bro who beached his toon.

Man, sorry to hear about the bad weekend there Curtis.

I guess I should just be glad that nothing can happend to my boat mechanically while sitting in storage. :(

I think we went out our last time of the year, the first weekend in August. Yep, momma said she doesn't want to bring the little girl out again this year, and I'd be in trouble if I went without them, so were probably done for the year on our toon.

Yeah it kinda sucked!

I have found a reman for 1000 (thats delivered). So NOT too terribly bad, hoping my in-laws feel sorry for us :lol3

I am not sure I want to tackle tearing into it.

Greg,

you still coming down in two weeks if so did you found out where on the lake you'll be?

What kind of problem do you think you have? If it is a lower unit you may want to look into an after market unit from SEI. You can't buy many parts for the $700-800 they cost. It is supposed to be a 3 year warranty. One of my neighbors has one on the way as we speak. I am curious to see how it goes. I just got through putting about $400 in mine and I wonder if I should have just replaced it. (seal kit, speedy sleeves on the shafts and a water pump base along with the water pump kit).

I concur about the SEI unit over a reman. Most remans I found were $300-600 more than the SEI units (which go for $795), and only came with a year warranty; SEI are new aftermarket units, that carry a 3 yr warranty. They also claim all their parts are interchangeable with OEM, so you don't have to worry about getting proprietary parts.

The real bonus is that they do not require a core charge, so you can sell your bad unit on Ebay or Craigslist and recover a couple hundred to help off set the cost. I have seen bad Yamaha units pull $500 with a cracked case!!!

Here is the link I believe goes with your motor:

The other good thing is now you have all winter to decide what you want to do.

I would still be curious what the clank was but getting that bearing carrier out for a look may not be worth the curiosity factor.
If it isn't bleeding oil from a cracked case it is hard to guess. I suppose you can pull the plug and see what comes out. It might just be rusty water with metal chunks in it.

Yep, Telal Bend Road 5, off of Hwy. 7, just before Warsaw, and after Tightwad. I think it's Long Shoals Marina, that is the closest to the Cabin. I would like to bring our toon down, but not sure with all of the family, that that's a good idea. I think we'll skip the toon this year, and next summer, plan on going down, and pulling the toon with us.
