4, 1 ton jacks installed on each corner of the toon trailer for stability on land.

wheel guides.

16 foot ramps off the front.

1 ton electric winch and pulley system which I am not willing to disclose at this point.

Piece o' cake. One button on OR off. :gay :smoke
I think he meant the hardtop... at least that's what I thought when I saw the pic. The top looks to be a rigid installation, but right in the way of pulling the trailer "off the front." Does it have quick releases?

The trailer fits under the front roof, which is 6'5" tall from the deck to the lowest rafter. The trailer - when folded - clears it buy several inches - the two front domed skylights and the rear domed skylight are the high point of the trailer.

Oh sure, wait for us to ask silly questions and THEN point out that you already gave us a way to get the answer. :wedgie

Looking awesome. Going back to reading and watching posts now. Pay no attention to the (stick)man behind the curtain.

Are you going to adapt the boat wiring with the trailer wiring so you can charge the house batteries off the outboard altenator?

Very nice... Have you weighed the whole package yet and compared to the weight of the Party hut before?

The picture of the cloud through the roof and beside the roof tells a lot about that stuff. Very cool.

I've kept the two electrical systems completely independent.

House batteries are charged by 90 watts of solar power on the trailer's roof, a high quality 1000 watt inverter supplies AC. With just the two of us - and careful management - we've got enough juice to run the stereo all day, and watch a movie at night. Most importantly I can grind fresh coffee in the morning. :coffee For night lighting I generally just use AAA battery operated LED's mounted on the ceiling - although incandescent and fluorescent 12V is available for reading.

Trying to charge up 2 deeply discharged deep cycle batteries for the trailer - and keep the deep cycle topped up for the motor - would be asking way too much of the motor's fairly wimpy alternator.

The only really large demand I'll have on the motor's battery is for the 2 fixed headlights I just mounted: a flood and a spot. There are times on Lake Powell when the ONLY chance you have of going somewhere is to get a really early morning start. Many days, and especially in the spring, the wind can start really howling by noon... you want to have found a great anchorage by then. :prayer

Dang, that's a really good idea. I should have thought about that a long time ago. :biggrin2

I'm still amazed how cool it is under the SunTuf. 8)

3 days and nights on the "yknot?"

#188 Post by RonKMiller » Thu May 19, 2011 6:15 pm

Yep, it was officially named the "yknot?" during our recent 3 day/night trip to Patagonia Lake in Southern AZ. It was a gas, and there were no major glitches, just a few minor things that need to be addressed.

We were going to stay only 2 nights but were having so much fun we booked another. The wind during day 1 and 3 was ferocious, approaching 30 knots at times. There were actually white caps on the lake for a while which I figured was NOT a good idea to take a toon out it in - but it did just great as long as I slowed down. We never had any glass smooth water to work with the whole time.

I was unable to run it at full throttle except for about ten seconds since the "engine cut" off kicked in, but I don't think it's an overheat situation since the alarm did not sound and the impeller I rebuilt is putting out an excellent stream of water. It could be that the sensor is so old (1987) that it simply needs to be replaced. Whatever the cause the engine runs great, and if there was a serious issue it would not have fired right up and run for hours at a time. I'm sure with a little work I'll be able to fix the issue since it is pretty straight forward to diagnose. During full throttle I was able to get the nose up - which was a complete surprise, so I think the center of mass is nailed down permanently. I would estimate the speed at 20 knots at full throttle, more than I hoped for with such a heavy boat. Other than that it just kind of plowed along at 4000 rpm, but was extremely smooth and stable with that third log. The old 90 horse 2 stroke YAMMY triple is a great engine once up to speed, but it does not like to idle or run under about 2000 rpm. I'm not too sure that even if I put a 115 on it would go any faster. Lots of prop cavitation unless you power up gradually.

Spending the evenings on a private island -even if the lake is only 250 acres - was really sweet. Except for the cost: $17.00 a night :alright - but they did throw in a picnic table and trash can. :biggrin2

After a few minor tweaks it will be off to Lake Powell this summer for an extended vacation.

Looks like you've got her nailed down pretty well. That little island would sureley be a fun place to spend the evening.

Oh, and that back little sun deck on the toon, with that background, at about sunset, and nobody else around..... Yea, the old lady would have a little fun.

I just went thru and read all 13 pages of this thread and I have to say that I am very impressed. This was some serious problem solving. I love it.

Two weeks on Lake Powell and Glen Canyon with the Y-Knot

#193 Post by RonKMiller » Sun Oct 23, 2011 9:02 am

What can I say... hi temperature around 80 each day and the low around 55 - for 14 straight days. One night of extremely strong (gusts to 50 mph) winds. Other than that no wind more than 15 knots the entire trip, and this was only during late afternoon typical heat driven periods of about 3 hours before subsiding.

Covered about 175 miles in total with several multi day stays at selected spots. The 1988 Yamaha 2 stroke 90 hp triple ran flawlessly. Cruising speed is exactly 20 mph at 4700 rpm with a 14 X 9 prop. I was able to run a stop watch over 1 mile buoy distances. 2.2 miles per gallon with 41 gallons on board gave me an effective 70 mile range with a decent reserve. Did not catch one fish! :donno

Everything worked perfectly except I did manage to knock my marine handheld radio over the side. It does not float! :happy
