Seeking “Prop-er” advice

#1 Post by Rudebob » Thu Apr 07, 2016 7:58 am

Looking for guidance from you prop-pros out there-

I finally got my tach working correctly so I can now see if I am propped right. Currently running a poorly repaired 11.25 X 10P prop on my 50 HP, 2- stroke Merc (non-bigfoot) pushing a 20' sweetwater pontoon, I presume was originally sold with the boat. WOT is 16.5 MPH (on GPS) at 5200 rpm with what I would describe is a normal load.

The prop is out of balance so I am replacing it with something else regardless. I don’t expect much change in top speed but if a different prop config might get me to 5500 RPM WOT and pick up a MPH or so that would be the direction I would like to go. The problem is there is not much in the way of configuration choices below 10P.

Should I go with a lower 9 of 9.5 pitch & smaller diameter, stick with a 10 pitch but smaller diameter that the current 11.25, or stick with the current config and figure a new and balanced prop might help a bit and be satistifed with current performance?

Thanks,

‘Bob
