Even the "boxy" cars have curves in the sheet metal and the pyramids in duct work are definitely there to keep the side walls from flexing and banging. Smooth is better for air flow.

My pontoon from metalite industry in Spokane has flat sided pontoons with a slight v almost flat bottom. They fill the pontoons with fitted styrofoam so even if they leak there isn't much room for water. Mine was built in 87 and there is still never a drop out of the plugs when I check them. Search Chinook boats or metalite and you can see pics. They still make them the same today.
