New Honda or Yamaha 150hp?

#1 Post by kman400 » Tue Jun 14, 2011 2:50 pm

I have new pontoon on order and the dealer is telling me it will be delayed a month or more if I stick with the Yamaha. I have no real reason to want the one over the other, both seem pretty good from what I have found on-line. We rented a pontoon last summer with 60 Yamaha really like it...very, very quite! What do you think? Thanks, Kelly!

Is the dealer a certified Honda repair shop? If so, I'd go with it. I don't believe I've ever seen a complaint on this site regarding a Honda.

Just me, The Honda is a great motor but still I had more trouble with it than any other I have owned. In the first month the SS screen over the intake came apart and lodged in the carb holding them open at 3/4 throttle. Ever tried to load a toon at 3/4 throttle. 2 weeks later it dumped the water pump and in process it ruined a seal beneath the flywheel and allowed water to invade the starter Bendix. I didn't know about the seal until 3 years later when I started have all kinds of issues. Well it was out of warranty by then. I sold it as is and told new owner the problem. He had it fixed at a cost of 2,300.00

I don't like our Honda 150

It's to damn quite. :nana I know I'm gonna damage the starter trying to start it while it's already running thinking it's not. LOL

For use, 80% of our boating will be at a slow cruise around the lake. Minus a few GPS runs, after a proper break-in, of course! Anyway, other than brand loyalty can anyone think of a reason to buy one over the other?

Nope, they are both top of the line 4 strokes. Love mine and the only reason I would go with anything else is if I wanted a 2 stroke which I don't

Lake what year Honda was that?? I have had neither but heard they are both good motors. Good point about who will service an their certification. All that stuff helps if warranty ever come into play.

I'll go buy tomorrow and see how it effects the price. If the price is a wash I'll opt for the Honda...thanks guys!

I still have nothing bad to say about my Mercury and it is made in America.

When I was shopping I walked through the shops of the dealers before I saw a salesman. I saw a pretty even mix of all the brands scattered around the shops in pieces. The mechanics I talked to seemed to agree, they all break and in the shops that did multiple brands, I wasn't really getting any strong opinions about who was most reliable.

I am 3000 hours on my motor with no major complaints

I have the exact same problem with my Yamaha VMAX 2 stroke. I put teh boat in the water for the first time Saturday. After starting if (for the first time this season) I had to walk back and look at the motor to see if it was running (and to check the pee hole). No sound at all and very little movement.

I love this motor.

Now mine is pushing 5 years old already (wow time flies) and it still runs like a top and is that quiet. I'm sure that whichever you go with it will be cool. (But I still love my Yammie)

New Honda or Yamaha 150hp?

#13 Post by kimbercarry » Wed Jun 15, 2011 9:45 am

The local pontoon rental folks use a mixture of Honda's and Yamaha's. Their recommendation, either one, no problems with either. The dealer where I bought the Benny carried Yamaha's so I got the 150. Four years later no problem, pull it every spring for fluid's change and that's it. If I had to do again, I would buy either with total confidence.

I'm trying to get into the habit of looking at the tach before I even touch the key to start the boat.
