Mercury OB reliability

#1 Post by playcat » Fri Feb 09, 2024 12:36 pm

Looking at a few used toons in the area all with 150-200hp engines. My number one concern is reliability. Its gotta start and run. My one experience with Mercury outboards was an old 150 on a runabout. When it ran, it was great. After a while, it began to run poorly, running fine at home before we left, then barely running on the water. Every shop we took it to had a different cause/repair but never got it running correctly. Finally sold it to a former Merc mechanic. It had three 2 barrel carbs which nobody seemed to know how to adjust or rebuild.
Are the fuel injected Mercs (say 2017 and on) more reliable? What should I know about before I buy one?
Thanks!
