Anyone here own a G3 SunCatcher?

#1 Post by ksmith » Tue Jun 21, 2011 8:54 pm

I am about to pick up a slightly used 2010 G3 SunCatcher LX 22FC w/ Yamaha F115 on Monday of next week. It will be our first pontoon boat. :dance

We were looking at a new Tracker "Fishin' Barge" with a Mercury 90HP two-stroke at the local dealership and the price was good, but I wanted a four-stroke, and the boss wanted more than a drop-down curtain from the bimini for the porta-potty. I will admit the Trackers rear live well setup is way better than the "under the couch" location of the G3. But the G3 has the aluminum cladding (or whatever the proper pontoon term is for that) underneath the deck instead of just exposed plywood.

I don't see a lot of posts here regarding G3. In fact, the brand isn't even listed in the "what brand do you own" poll. I've been told they only make around 2000 pontoon boats a year, as opposed to Tracker who makes 18,000. Those numbers are probably wrong and besides, smaller production runs don't always mean greater quality.

All that said, are G3's any better/worse than other pontoon boats in any way?

Thanks,
Kevin

I really see a lot of G3 jon boats and welded aluminum fishing boats. They appear to have an active dealer base in my general area.

The pontoons look okay to me, and with a dealer base expect to see more of them in the future.

With a 4 stroke Yamaha 115, you'll have very good performance, and you should be very satisfied with your boat. You won't be sorry you went 4 stroke.

I don't own a G3, but when I was shopping for a pontoon, I came very very close to buying a 20 footer ( G3 ) with a 90hp yamaha on the back end. I really liked the boat. Only reasons I ended up buying a bennington are (1) the G3 dealer was a little over an hour away so I was a little concerned about th at as far as warranty work, and (2), the general manager at the bennington dealer used to be the kid that lived across the street from me for years, and he ended up giving me a deal that was cheaper than the G3.... but I saw nothing wrong with the G3 and like I said, came very close to buying one myself.

I strongly considered a G3 prior to ordering my Bennington. G3 is owned by Yamaha and anything they put there name on is pretty good. I thought the G3 offered excellent value and I liked the color/graphics packages on the model we were considering. My wife on the other hand did not like the boat based on looks alone. I would add that the seats did feel very average and not anything like the Bennington R series that we bought. To be fair, the Bennington was 20K more than the G3 we were considering.

G3 was on my short list. Ended up with a Bennington 2274 with a 150 Yamaha. Nice rig and on the pricey side but figured it would be the last boat of this sort we would need to buy. So far so good. A couple of my dock mates have new G3s. There are some things I like about them.

Several years ago a G3 was on my short list mainly because they were local and I knew Brent Lowe (even though I don't think he is with the company any more). Any way, while looking a the unit we were interested in, I noticed some trim parts coming loose, a swing in/out cup holder wouldn't work, and a couple of other little things that made me real nervous. Sooooo, I went another direction.

Second year with our 2012 LX3 22SE by G3. So far no issues with the boat or the Yamaha 225 engine. One thing I would do is treat the logs with Sharkhide before we put it on our lift.
The fit and finish are very good and it handles well. The ski pole is easy to install and at 50mph we can tow anything.
I felt it was a good value when I bought it and still feel that way. The JC and Bennington are great boats but I didn't want to spend that kind of money.

Hey All,
New member and looking at a G3 V22F SunCatcher.

Online, there are some video's of SunCatchers with hull breaches.

Is this a common problem, or an occassional problem?

The one we're looking at as our first pontoon is for sale by Shady Creek Marina at El Dorado Reservoir in Kansas about 40 minutes away from us.

A years covered slip rental would be included. I don't know yet if that slip has a lift.

Any thoughts?

We bought a 2013 G3 V22C in February. We've been on the lake a half dozen times since we bought it and Love, Love it! No issues so far, and we don't expect any :)

I hope you enjoy yours as much as we do ours!

Ours is red like yours but an F instead of a C.

I hope we enjoy ours as much as you're enjoying yours and that you continue to do so.

I'm REALLY looking forward to this.
