southwind hurricane fun deck fun chaser

#1 Post by parker23 » Sun Sep 10, 2017 6:16 am

I wanted to know what kind of ride a southwind V series or H 201FS crossdeck boat would have in the Delaware Bay say going to site 8 or the hurricane or fun chaser Tom

I guess no one on this site owns a hurricane fun deck I was told that they were rough on the water. I was hopping someone would know how they are in rough water? southwind and carolina skiff make the fun chaser all look like a pontoon up top but have a fiberglass bottom I was hopping a boat like that I could fish the Delaware bay and still run the Rehoboth bay and Indian river inlet where their are alot of sand bars

Let me just say we've seen some pontooners step to a Hurricane deck boat for more speed. But they also have come back to bigger horsepower pontoons (than they had originally) because they didn't like the ride of the deck boat. And once you get used to the room on a pontoon, a normal sized hulled boat is somewhat constricting in room.

Questions: why can't you take a TRITOON (not pontoon) in Delaware Bay? My 24Ft Tritoon will smoke check any deckboat in rough water. Whoever said a hurricane or similar deckboat is a V-Hull is feeding you a line. Deckboats and Carolina Skiffs etc.. are a modified V hull, or more commonly referred to as Tri-Hulls, they have a slight V entry probably around 12 degree deadrise at the very forward part of the bow, then flatten out dramatically at about 1/3 to half way going astern. V-Hull Monohull boats usually have a 20 degree or more entry, and only fade slightly going aft for stability. A tritoon will cost more than a pontoon, but has endless possibilities. I have owned every design boat there is, from a 1968 18 ft. TriHull , which would knock your mollers out of your head coming off a wake, to Deep V Offshore Center Consoles, Pontoons, and now a TriToon. The Tritoon is head and shoulders above in versatility and ride, except for the Deep V Ride, which is only needed for offshore excurions, and they don't have the room of a toon. You will not be happy in a deckboat in the Delaware Bay, I can tell you that.

A few years ago when I started looking for a boat my plan was to buy a deck boat, I found out my neighbors brother in law had one and let me use it for a few days on our biggest (rough) lake, It was the worst ride I've ever had on a boat in rough conditions or even wakes. The thing would knock you're teeth out. I tested a tri-toon on the same lake, it wasn't even close, It was so much smoother and really just as fast. It's still no picnic when it's rough but not comparable. There are a few on here with pontoons in your area. there are some manufacturers that make a deeper V deck boat than Hurricane, But they can be very expensive.

The dealer around hear told me that a tri-toon you have to bring on plane and my wife can't drive a boat that has to be brought on plane. I wouldn't be feel safe taking a pontoon of any kind in the Delaware bay with all the plywood holdiing it together so that is why I was looking at fun deck boats because they have a firberglass bottom. I know about the other brands of fun deck boats and know what you mean about the price

First of all this "dealer" sounds like a real piece of work, Tritoons with lifting strakes still do not plane like a mono-hull boat, the strakes help lift the boat up to a semi-planning attitude. My tritoon "planes" at around 15-16 MPH, so I really don't get your statement "my wife can't drive a boat that has to be brought on plane" what do you think a deckboat is going to do? they plane, and if not on plane you would be completely swamped by any waves or wake you entered as they are much lower to the water. These new higher performance tritoons are not "held together with plywood". for someone who according to your signature owned a Parker, which is an higher tier boat, you seem extremely unknowledgeable on boat dynamics and hull design. maybe you should have this "Dealer" take you for a ride on a rough day.

I will when I decide what I want. I am just looking and asking question. witch of the tri-toons does not use plywood for a floor? I live in Delaware and not many take there pontoon or tri-toon in the delaware bay. They stay in the Rehoboth or Indian river bay. The deadrise on a deck boat is 10 to 12 deg and run throw the water like a tri hull they kind of plow through the water at low speeds. That is why I was looking at them and asking question. I don't think I will be out there on a rough day with my wife and Grandkids?

I think your dealer may be biased against pontoons in general. A high performance pontoon will not be held together with plywood. It will have a ladder type structure/frame welded to the pontoons. They will typically have an aluminum underskinning as well to keep water out and the bottom smooth. There will likely be plywood, but it is just a substrate for the carpet/flooring. I won't argue the merits of a true V hull in big water vs. a pontoon, however, vs a typical deck boat, a performance pontoon will likely do better given equivalent waves/water. I suspect this is a big reason why pontoons are "hot" right now and you don't see many deck boats running around. Several of the big name pontoons even offer twin or triple motors. Welcome and good luck with your search.

I was biased against pontoons for a long time. I knew my Sea Ray 20' Bowrider was too small and the ride became awfully rough on a busy weekend day on our lake when it fills with wake and surf boats. After riding in all the options (pontoon, triton, deck boat, larger bowrider), I bought a tritoon. It's proven to be a great choice for rough days.

Over Labor Day weekend, as we were walking down the dock towards our boat, I noticed a tritoon and a deckboat headed our way to dock and have lunch at one of the dockside restaurants. The lake was very rough (lots of traffic) and it was about 10 knot wind. Both the tritoon and deckboat were going about the same speed (I'd guess 20 mph), on the same course, about 50 feet apart. The ride difference was very obvious as I watched the bimini on the deck boat pitching and jerking all around as it hit wakes and waves. The tritoon top was hardly moving.

Thanks I think I'm leaning more to a pontoon/tri-toon? I am 65 wife 62 been fishing all my life and no one wanted to fish anymore off shore. Son gets sick now wife does not wanted to anymore Grandkids to little right now. I was thinking if I could get like a fun deck it could do the things a pontoon can and with the fiberglass bottom I could fish. If I get a pontoon I am limited to where I can fish but I be good and will find fish? I can't buy a smaller V bottom won't be able to do the things with family and that is why I got rid of my boat so it looks like I'm going to look over the winter more at the pontoon/tritoons. I am going to hit some boat shows

the premier has been great for us. lots of great high performance pontoon builders out there. if i were strictly looking at big water, manitou would probably top my list.
