Bug residue

#1 Post by Sailor Bill » Sat Jun 30, 2018 3:11 pm

Hello,
Our new Manitou is kept on a hoist in Northern Michigan. After one week it was covered with what looked like brown paint ball splatters. It turns out to be residue from some bugs that are about 3/4" long and dark brown or black. I spoke to several other pontoon owners who don't have the problem. My wife and I spent several hours in the water with Fantastic and brushes removing those splatters. They were all over. The bugs were all over the inside of the boat. They also left their mess on the mooring ball that we have as well as the dock pilings and our hoist. Does anyone know what they are and how to prevent them? Thank you.

Hmmm, would really need to see a pic of the overall situation. Could you cover the boat with some type of commercial boat cover or tarp? Maybe a black light bug zapper 20-30 feet away to draw them away, but they are indiscriminate killers and you have to keep them cleaned out. I have seen a bug zapper catch on fire cause it was so full of bugs.

We get spider crap all over our seats and here is what I found:

1 - Periodically, I kill the spiders. I douche our pier and lift with a sprayer and some kind of insecticide (I think it is Wisdom TC that I purchased from Tractor Supply).

2 - Keeping my cover on helps a lot.

3 - I also clean my furniture and put a good coat of 303 on (3-4 times a year). I may be imagining things but the seats seem easier to clean if I keep 303 on them.

Depending on the bugs that are leaving their residue, you may throw some mothballs in your boat as that sometimes keeps them away.
