Anchors
I'm trying to determine the best anchor for my boat. I've spoken with several people and retailers trying to determine the best/easiest anchor for a rocky bottom and everyone tells me different things. The bottom of my "soon to be lake" is very rocky. I've been told Flukes, Plows, Rivers and Shrooms are both good and bad. My main problem is spending $100+ on an anchor and drifting all over the damn place. Does anyone have any ideas or personal preferences?

Re: Anchors
I'll weigh in on the richter anchor too.
I've only had one slip on me once, It was a very windy day and the waves were coming right into the cove.
On the flip side the anchor did manage to scoop up three pairs of sunglasses as it was dragged across the bottom that day.
Other than that one day the hold has been rock solid.

Re: Anchors
i use a very basic galvanized danforth.
always been happy with it. except the long stock rod sticking out both sides
made it a pain to store onboard. i cut 'em off with a right angle grinder and
it still holds the boat just fine.
you can get one cheap on ebay.

I use two Danforths like FloaterBoater. Not sure how good they might be able to get out of a tight rock pile. I think BF uses the cinder block because he spent all his $$$ on that stereo!

Re: Anchors
I bought a couple of "round bottom" anchors at walmart. Each was 15 lbs. Used them twice and both times the boat seems to drift anyway. So is the problem the anchors are too light, or is the problem the type of anchor, and if so, would the one mentioned in the post above with the link be a good "all around general use anchor" thanks!

Re: Anchors
like that?
mushroom anchors are for sand or mud. they stink with a hard or rocky bottom.
Re: Anchors
yep, that's the one... no good huh? so what type and how heavy of an anchor should I be using? one or two anchors.. have no idea what the lake bottom is comprised of? It's Caddo lake in North Louisiana / East Texas.FloterBoter wrote:

Re: Anchors
I've also fought the anchor issue, and tried quite a few of them myself. The richter anchor is one I've read several people review as a extremely good holding one. Since we sleep on our boat every weekend and we boat on a river with dam's about every ten miles. The last thing I wanted to wake up to was sitting crosswise on top of the dam or in the boiling waters below it. After reading some excellent reviews on them I found this Box Anchor on sale and purchased it, and I've been sleeping soundly ever since. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv2ybwgcaL8 I especially like the fact it doesn't need a chain, and folds flat for easy storage.
