Port-A-Potty
As a new pontoon owners we are researching models of port-a-potties and finding that there are many on the market.
Reviews for them are not much help because they are all positive and no one says NEVER buy this brand or model because . . .
What do you recommend or what do you NOT recommend?
In our boating experiences with friends, none of them had one onboard and so trips were interrupted with heading back to shore for the facilities. Our pontoon has a changing room.
If we have one aboard, maybe no one will need to use it?
Since several here have camping experience and some of your stay overnight on your toons, you should have this question covered. LOL

Re: Port-A-Potty
I did not want to mess with a holding tank. A lot of my Land Cruiser forum buddies use the PETT http://www.thepett.com/ (Phillips Environmental Toilet).
I have a changing room but got the whole deal with the tent and backpack along with a bunch of WAG bags on ebay for less than $150 if I remember right.
This is a full height full size oval seat unit that is very stable. The main feature is that the waste is easy to deal with. I keep a paint barrel with top to throw the WAG bags in (inside the big zip lock) then the whole lot gets tossed in any trash container. For the wife, kids and I we use just one bag per day for urine. We usually go back to the lake house for other business but it would not be a problem if we did not feel like going back. We just use an extra WAG bag. They cost less than the fuel to get back to the house.

I also have a Thetford, it's great and we haven't had any problems with it other than everyone in our raft up wanting to use it. So, I've instituted a new policy that only hot chicks can. After showing me something.

I really like the PETT system. Rather than have a toilet that you have to mess with, you get a complete system for about the cost of a porta potti without the mess. Worth looking into.

Re: Port-A-Potty
We just got this one in this week. It was on sale for $79.95
with an extra 10% off that. If you don't get an Overton's catalog
request one and you'll get one about every 2 weeks. some stuff is
kinda pricey but they have some good sales sometimes and a
daily special on their website.

Don't forget Walmart's sells chemicals so those that do #2 in a porta potty cause no problems. Just don't leave it in the toilet much longer than a week. Maybe ten days max depending on Temp's.

No disrespect meant here but through experience we've found Walmart's so called bargain chemicals severely lacking and left toilet wastes quite pungent. We've found that spending more (goes against my grain too) is actually the better bargain for potty chemicals. We've found with the better products far less is needed for excellent results both in the boat and when dumping the tank. Trust me on this with cheep or bad chemicals the worst part of the porta-potty experience is dumping the tank and with good chemicals is almost or is a real non-issue.cbavier wrote:Don't forget Walmart's sells chemicals so those that do #2 in a porta potty cause no problems. Then go to Camping World or an RV Dealer and pay twice as much for the same thing. Aqua- Kem has been around the RV Industry for 40 years and Walmart's sells it and it's the same thing RV dealers sell for twice as much. The newer chemicals I can't vouch for but Aqua -Kem I can. Been RVing from Travel Trailers and Truck Campers with both Toilets and Porta Potty's and back to motor Homes and back to Fifth Wheels since 1963 and Aqua-Kem has been the best. Never a problem. NEVER! And I buy it now at Walmart's. Used to have to buy it at RV Dealers because nobody else sold it back then. Same with Toilet paper. You can buy the cheap stuff or Aqua-Kem Toilet paper and never have a clogging problem. Yea the cheap stuff is 99 cents a four pack. The Aqua-Kem is $2.98 but never a problem or Brown Finger. I did buy some Green Stuff (Chemicals) at Camping World one time on sale. Introductory Offer I think? It worked real good and smelled good but I don't remember what it was now though. Aqua-Kem is dark Blue by the way and a little Dab will do ya.
No I don't have any stock in or connection to Aqua-Kem. Just a fifty year satisfied customer.

Re: Port-A-Potty
Whatever chemicals you use, NEVER use the dissolving packets in a porta potti. The packet doesn't dissolve completely and it's an instant clog in the bellows. Always use liquid or powder. I buy at Eastern Marine in Delaware, good prices, no tax and use the pine scented treatment by Star Brite.
