Trying to beat the heat
This weekend I had to work on Saturday, so the idea was to get out on the lake on Sunday with our used 'toon that we have had for all of 2 months. Saturday ended up being 105 degrees (I have an outside job) and Sunday was forecasted at 107. After some hemming and hawing about the heat, around noon, the wife and I finally decided to round up the kids and go the lake as planned (one the few that is still accessible). She gets the kids ready and I run off to the storage to get the pontoon.
I drive back with the boat and circle around the cul-de-sac to the front of our house. Suddenly hear a pop and see one of the trailer tires rolling through the front yard. I get out and go over and stand by the separated tire shaking my head.
The bearings, or remnants of them....
and what they did to the hub....
My 8 year old son comes out and sees me, sees the tire and says "isn't that s'posed to be on the trailer?" I tell him it usually works better that way. He sighs and says "we aren't going to the lake are we?" I look at my watch and tell him not to count ol' dad out yet....
I race off to Academy to get a new trailer hub, rush back to the house and sit in the street to start fixing the hub. Did I mention it was 107? I yelp, then run to the garage to get a towel to put on the asphalt so I can sit on it and THEN start removing the toasted hub and installing the new one. 20 minutes later, coated in sweat and covered in grease I triumphantly step through the front door and tell everyone we are ready. My wife says we aren't ready till I change, clean up and wipe all the grease off the front door that I just walked through....
Told ya not to count dad out yet..
Needless to say, we beat the heat and had a great day at the lake, even if we did get a little later start than we wanted.

Congratulations on hanging in there, you made your family's day I am sure, they all looked happy. Probably a lot of us would have said the heck with it, try it another day, esp. at 107 degrees.

Jac, you get Father of the Year nominations!!
Glad to see all the tykes in life jackets. They may be hot and bothersome, but when something bad happens, looking for the jackets is not going to happen.

Re: Trying to beat the heat
I had a little "shovel ready project" myself this weekend. Saturday morning we woke up to a flooded yard. That oak tree ate a pipe going to my well and I had to reroute it. It was a pretty tough way to spend a Saturday. I got the water going Saturday and finished rerouting the electric Sunday in time to get in a boat ride.

I know exactly what your talkin about Greg, my family owns a water well business and the drought sure is taking it's toll on underground water pipes.....digging them up and repairing in this heat is pain!!!!!!

Re: Trying to beat the heat
This was all the tree I imagine. It grew wild there and I knew it was going to break a pipe some day but I really liked having a shade tree on the south side of the driveway.
I think I am far enough away to avoid any more problems.
There were two 1" pipes and a conduit there. I have bypassed the conduit and one of the pipes so far. Now I have to try to shoot a pipe 20 feet under the driveway to get the unbroken pipe out of danger.

I know I've read on another post, you said that's what's great about florida's sandy ground! You can shoot a 20' pipe under the driveway with the hose?????

Re: Trying to beat the heat
Big smiles are sometimes worth a little heat.
My sister flew on a Learjet out of Memphis Airport Friday @ 104 degrees. The FAA said it was 114 degrees in Little Rock at the time. 107 degrees is getting to be normal for Texas. It's a shame it won't rain in Texas--getting to be another desert.
We only have another month of such ultra high heat--the good news.

It's been extremely hot here in Houston, my local lake is drying up and FAST, the water at the deep ramp is only about 1'deep. So I can't go there, but I can always go to the gulf of Mexico I don't ever see it drying up

Re: Trying to beat the heat
Yep, that is how it works but the trick is hitting the spot you want on the other end. This time I am really hoping to hit a foot wide hole and I would really like it to line up with the pipe I have on the other side but that may be a little greedyMrtoler wrote:I know I've read on another post, you said that's what's great about florida's sandy ground! I am really hoping to get 2 pipes in that hole from the other side.

Think that the gulf is scheduled to dry up next year,my inlaws live outside San Antonio, guess it's pretty hot and dry when they wish for a tropical storm or hurricane.

Funny, we are actually scheduling two trips to the gulf in the next month and a half since we are reduced to boating in a few hoofprints with water left in them....
