Problems with radios

#1 Post by Cobra427cable » Wed Jun 02, 2010 9:04 am

Anyone have trouble with their stereo's after a rain? I have a Sony marine radio that came with my boat and after leaving the boat cover off and some overnight sprinkles, the dang thing was all messed up and it appeared the removable faceplate was damaged. I could use the remote and it would work sometimes but the display was all jacked up. I had the unit replaced since it was still new and now I had this newer unit doing the same dang thing. Isn't a marine radio supposed to be water proof? Is there a deck that anyone recommends that can deal with a little water and keep on tick'n? I know some boats have a cover for their radio but this one's mounted right out in the weather.

There is no such thing as a "water proof" radio....while they have come a long way to make them water resistant they will still fail if enough water gets in the wrong place.
There are some that do a better job(ie the Clarion CMD5, or the Sony CDX-H910UI just to name a few) in the weather but again if water finds its way into the unit it will fail just the same. Why dont you put a nice splash cover on it? If you get the nice cover and seal it when installing it...it will do a good job protecting the unit. 8)

ok...a splash cover sounds nice (would think the manufacturer would have thought of that) but is there some place I can get this and it will seal?

SunTracker did put radio covers on 2007 and earlier. Don't know why they took them off in 2008. Check with your SunTracker dealer.

Here's something like I have. It will work if your radio is mounted in the dash!

If your radio is free standing then this might work for you.

My '09 Suntracker came with a splash cover and I have not had any problems with water, I just have to remember to close the cover. I thought the cover was standard with the radio.

I have the Poly-Planar cover that the old man post above. I like the way it looks, but I have broken the cover off at least once a year.

The poly-planar splash cover that Oldmn19 posted -

is the one I like and have in my boat. Good Luck. 8)
