Engine Paint

I have a 1987 Johnson 70 hp engine that runs great but it looks bad from years of exposure to the elements. I would to repaint it & try to put it back to original colors. I am not good at painting & have no idea what type of paint to use or if I need to prime it first before applying the final color. If anyone can give me some info about this I would appreciate it very much. Thanks

I am in the process of painting one and bought the cans of paint from a boating supply house. They have a specific color for the Johnson motors. Use a light color primer so you do not have to use too much paint. I have 100 HP and figure two cans should do it.

Just remember, good preparation is the key to a great paint job. Take your time, and make sure the surface is 100% clean and free of debris. Then lightly prime, and then paint. Depending on temp. and humidity, wait about 2-3 hours between coats ( so the paint won't transfer, but is a bit tacky to the touch). Also, you don't need to strip all of the old paint, just make sure the stickers are off the motor, and you have the necesities taped off or covered. Good Luck.
