Hey guys, little help please. the other day my son came by the house and I asked him if there was anything special he wanted for christmas. He said the only thing he really wanted was a winch for his new atv. well I don't own an atv, never had one, so my knowledge base is pretty low... he suggested a winch made by a company named "warn"... it's the xt30.. my god, I had no idea these things could cost this much... The cheapest I've found it was around $425 all the way up to $650.-- Do any of you guys know anything about Warn....good product, other brands you would recommend? Oh and of course I have to buy some kind of mounting kit at additional cost.. so I think at the very least I;m looking at 5 bills......its' not like 500 will send us to the poor house, but my goodness that seems like alot of money for a small electric motor and synthetic rope..... Maybe I'm just getting tight in my old age!

I have one made by warn I think I paid 300 in 00. Super winch makes them as well they just arnt as plush looking my buddy has one it works as well as mine. The synthetic line is nice I have a cable on mine an its a pain a lot of the time.

Your son has good taste, Warn is top of the line. I have one on mine. Luckily when I bought mine I got it free with the promotion they had going. Don't know the model but I believe it's rated at around 2,500.

I have seen cheaper ones below $100 at Tractor Supply on sale but have no idea about the quality.

Warn winches are top of the line, however prices are also very high. Most people don't have use for such expensive winches on their trucks or ATV's. There are many other brands on the market for much less $.

I have three Honda Foreman ATV's, one of which has a winch.

Harbor Freight sells ATV winches, and one is on sale @ $79:

It should be okay for most peoples' use. They also have a larger one for $129.

Warns are definately the top of the line in price. and are a usually a good quality. I have a Viper on mine and so far it has been great, a couple coworkers also have them and are very pleased. Vipers get a lot of great reviews on the atv forums I belong to. They are quite often compared to Warn for quality, but at a better price

Don't know anything about winches, but I would quiz your son and see how set he is on the warn brand, as to it being a suggestion or that's what he thinks he needs and wants. Typically things in this category will pull much more than their rating in lbs. Most things that deal with lifting or pulling have a pretty high safety factor.

I just bought one of these for my Max Amphibious, but I haven't installed it yet. Online reviews were pretty good though.

the xt30 has a 3000# capacity
chepest Ive seen is here for $412 shipped

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PJ ... B001PJNSPY

the xt25 has a 2500# capacity, ands its $300 shipped and there is a $50 rebate right now making it $250
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RN ... B000RNY6JG

its 500# difference, will he really be needing it or he will just be wasting it if he has it.
seems the 2500 and 3000 are in completely different leagues price wise

Buy the smaller one. If he tries pulling 3000 lbs he will break his Atv in half! Seriously mine is 2500 and i've tried to pull heavy things only to have it start pulling my Atv forward. I have wedged it against at tree to try to hold in in place but if the item is too heavy things start making strange noises and I stop before something breaks. The frames can't take that much force.

+1 on above.

We just use our winch to hold our ATV on the landscape trailer without having to tie it down. It's really just insurance in case you get stuck--something I've never done. A 550 pound ATV's work load is actually limited due to the weight of the bike and you cannot load them down with just 4 pounds of pressure in the tires.

Two of my ATVs' tires are about shot @ 1000 miles, however buying 8 new ATV tires @ $100 each is tough on the old pocketbook. For Christmas, I'd rather have a new set of MudLites and a good come-a-long than a Warn winch.

Warn is good but over priced IMO. Go with a Viper, you won't be disappointed. They have great customer support and parts are available should you need them. Don't get confused with Venom winches... not so good. A 3000 lb. winch might sound like a lot but not when you're buried to your axles in mud... the way they rate these things can be misleading.
