So, the water is sucked out by a low pressure area - created by the hole at the bottom - as you are moving?

Whooda thunk, but then again I've NEVER been back there while underway - always stuck up front. Guess it's time to let the gf take over for a few minutes. :scared :scared

I was thinking that if it was sealed up, lined with some spray foam and a simple plywood hinged top - it would make ONE HELL OF A BEER COOLER :rofl

(I have to go with Bamby's solution that it's there to prevent accumulated rain water/snow melt from freezing and cracking the transom/motor mount. Aluminum is SOFT)

I have a large oval hole in the back of my 100% aluminum transom. Always wondered why they designed it to fill with water. An I/O is kept dry inside. I'd rather have the bouyancy.

Yeah because even a LITTLE bit of water gets into a gimbal bearing, it's toast.

I'm going to have some welding done on mine next week to attach a new center log to the existing transom. I think I'll have him fill in the *drain hole* while he's at it. I sure don't need to worry about water and freezing issues in Tucson - especially since my toon is covered in the winter. I can always drill it out again if I need to. I'm pretty sure it's going to be a bit louder though...

By my calculations I'll be gaining an extra 195 lbs. of buoyancy. Since I'm carrying 41 gallons of gas - or 254 lbs. when topped off - that should be a nice bonus..

Until 2009 Manitou also had the open transom. After a few design changes we came up with this transom for the SHP when we worked with streamlining the transom pod to where it meets the center toon. We found that the holeshot and time to plane decreased dramatically. And by extending it another 8" back, behind the outer toon's we gained a few more miles per hour. I was going to post this when the thread was still fresh but it took me awhile to find this pic, its on my Manitou Thumbdrive which was in my old briefcase that hasn't been opened since we parted paths.
My Premier is the open design and I think they went closed in 2011? PTX owners, If you read this, is yours closed or open? And what years your Premier, just curious...

Yeah, so if they can design an I/O transom to be waterproof, then they whould be able to design an outboard transom to be watertight and provide more bouyancy. So why make them wet?

OK I CANT TAKE IT ANY MORE. It is to keep fuel from building up in the transom (old school 2 cycles are filthy little motors and all the drippings from them would build up and slime the transom making a fire hazard, so they flooded it. get yourself up and moving and take a look back there, "no water" the low presher sucks it all out. ya it all gos in the lake but so dos your beer when you are done with it.

My 1988 Yammy 90 horse two stroke doesn't leak a drop of oil, and if it did it would leak out the rear of the motor....

My old Etec was clean as a whistle, too. I think its just the old school way of building transoms. Cheap and easy vs high tech. The old open transoms look ugly, the new closed pods are alot more eye appealling to consumers. Probably safer too, If you did have alot of fuel and oil spilling in there, and floating on top of the water while resting, one lit butt might ruin your day. I sure don't think it was dsigned to be a crud catcher.
