Re: Evenrude motor i need desperate help!
i will try that. Is it possible to change the water pump while its in the water lol?
Re: Evenrude motor i need desperate help!
No the boat would need to be out of the water as the lower half of the engine would be removed.

If you attempt the water pump have some help as those old Evin and Johnson need 6 hands when reassembling. The shift shaft has to un bolted under the power head. You will need a flex socket as it is at a bad angle. Be care full the water pipe isn't in a bind as it is copper and bends easy. I suggest you get a repair manual for that motor.
Those old motors last a long time with good maintenance.
Good luck

Re: Evenrude motor i need desperate help!
ok, so i changed the water pump which was fried! but yet its still getting really hot? thermostat is next but i cannot find the damn thing. where is it? lol im such a newbie
Re: Evenrude motor i need desperate help!
After i did a little research on that year and size of motor I dont see a thermostat. (doesnt mean its not there) im sure someone knows better then me on that. As for the over heating since i didnt see a thermostat i would go into the carb. Do a rebuild or replace. The carb can cause your problem and replace the striped adjuster

Re: Evenrude motor i need desperate help!
thanks for helping with the thermostat issue, heres what I done..I replace the water pump and i rebuilt the carb and to my amazement!!! my boat is now in the water and not getting hot..its actually spitting alot of water out of the pee hole which it didnt do before!! But now i have one simple problem..my pontoon is missing my top speed??? it seems like its not getting full throttle..i used my gps and its went from going 15 to 9 mph. Thats a big difference..i adjusted the float level with the gasket line after the carb build..i think this has to be in my throttle cable adjustment because when i have the motor wide open i can reach back by the motor and manually give it more throttle..Would me losing top speed have anything to do with the lean/rich knob?? should i adjust this while im at w.o.t?? or just in idle? The tec lady told me to screw it all the way in than back it out 2.5 turns and go from there. thanks for the help..Nice to see people helping people.
Re: Evenrude motor i need desperate help!
From what you put there it sound like the cable is out of adjustment. I would check and make sure that the cable is tight at idle. If not then it may be stretched some. do you have to throttle up much before the motor starts to gain rpms. Main thing to watch for when adjusting is that you dont get it to tight and make it idle high.
