Most of my boating is cruising out to the party cove (I can see it from my dock) and cruising back. So gas would have to get too expnsive to drive the 15 miles to the dock in order for me to stop boating entirely

Lets see. I pay 3000 a year for the slip. I figure with that investment already in I will be on the boat even if I just sit and fish under the dock.

I would probably cut down my tubing and skiing a little bit though.

Well for me to stop boating, gas would have to get pretty high, and that would be for the gas to get to the lakes, not the gast the boat would use. Over the past 2 years, I've never had to put more than 2 full tanks of gas in the boat all season, and the tank is a 20gal tank. We sit and drink quite a bit, and have friends that do the running around in their Mastercraft. They drink about 2 full tanks of gas a day in their boat.

BMR....please don't tempt me. :nono I have been battling whether or not to just get a slip even though my storage unit is only 2-3 minutes away. I believe the slips are $1045 (covered, max 9 ft) for May-Sep. I don't think it's too bad really but one thing that's holding me back is the idea that the wife could just get on it and go while I'm at work. I'd hate for that to happen. :x

slipping is the way to go! Boat is in the water and ready to go when you are. We slip and if we didn't we wouldn't use our boat nearly has much. We hang out on it during the evening after work, when the weather isn't so great, etc. Unfortunately we pay about 2.5k a season (April-Oct), uncovered and that's for our half of a 25x20 double slip with someone else. At least last year I got lucky and had a whole double slip to myself. Sure made docking easy!

We have about 115 to 120 mile one way shot to the lake. We pull the boat down at the beginning of July or some times a little earlier, depends on the camping in the mountains. Our summer storage rental runs $15 a month, between two large lakes with 11 campgrounds that are either BLM or Reclamation. We drive an old motor home, nice but old and paid for a long time ago. The boat is a 17 foot, plenty for two old people. We have 3 six gallon boat tanks and three, 5 gallon gas tanks. Last year we used almost all that gas, we can't remember if there was one or two left over. We run a 35hp Johnny that's been around since 1977. We putt most of the time, spending about four to six hours a day, every day, two weeks at a time. Then we make the trip home to check on things, spend a day or so and then head back to the lake for another couple of weeks. We have a new little tow car we could use for that commute, but what the heck, some times you gotta live on the wild side. We usually end the lake trips in mid to late September. Since we don't owe payments on that old, slow, boat....or, on that old motor home...I guess we can still afford a little gas.

The advantage of having the boat behind the house is you can go for a short ride after work. It doesn't have to be an expedition.

I hadn't thought about this much. My house is only 16 miles from the ramp, but I still spend more on gas getting to the lake than I do on the lake. I've heard that gas is supposed to hit $5/gallon this summer, but that concerns me more for my daily travel than my lake trips. I'll still go to the lake.

I just may reconsider getting into fishing or tubing... I dont know.

Oh and to closest water will be a bit over an hour, anywhere I go, even If I wanted to hit the salt, that would be about 45min
