Are you there God? Its me, Katie (decking question)

Pulled the boat this week and had her power washed.

All proud of my shiny old boat i hope up on and get to work. :nana

I pull up the sundeck and the hinge pops off. Ok no biggie....and then i see WHY the hinge popped off. Rotted wood.

no big deal. nothing major. :coffee

Then i had my boyfriend hop on the boat to grab the rotted wood off. As he is walking back to the bow i watch him.....and he sags a bit. :scared

Sure as $hit, i have a soft spot on the bow. Its in front of the playpen about a 4 foot spot on the starboard side (sorry thats the best picture i got at the moment.)
There was some old timers at the marina who said to replace the board is easy.
Pop off the aluminum corners
Unbolt it underneath at the beam
pull back the carpet
slide out the rotted board
slide in the new board
button it all back up.

Is it really THAT easy?

Also I am going to have to break down and get a cover. I thought i could be coverless but clearly the wood cant handle it.
She stays in the water all summer, but i cant justify spending 1k on a cover when i paid under 3k for the boat. :donno

Would something like this work? http://www.overtons.com/modperl/product ... am&i=39321

Thanks for any insight :)

They lied to you, the carpet is glued down, so every thing needs to come off and redeck it, just call Pontoon Stuff and tell them what size your boat is and what you want carpet or vinyl and they will send you every thing to redeck it and don't worry about it for another 20 years

katie, I suggest looking at the covers on pontoonstuff.com they have three levels, good-better-best....... and reasonably priced. also if you order from pontoon stuff, you can get a 10% discount by using the following coupon code: forum10 It's a discount that they give to all the members here on this forum.

You should go ahead and pull the fencing and console, and go ahead with completely new Marine Plywood. Lowes/Home Depot 3/4" plywood will not work. Most major cities have specialized plywood stores that carry the stuff.

It's not that bad of a job, but glueing carpet down is best done in warm weather. Marine carpet requires special mastics, and it's got to be rolled down to keep the bubbles out. The roller weighs 100 lbs. and is a little heavy to get up on the deck from the ground.

don't use carpet....altho the cover will help. I have a fishing model without carpet---love it. Always wondered if you could use Velcro to hold carpet down so you could pull it up to clean it and dry everything out.

I have little confidence I can redeck the bow let alone the whole boat. That gets into electrical. I couldn't just do the bow?

Use the special marine grade plywood that PS sells it isn't cheap but it will last. and I used vinyl on my rebuild and it sheds water.

Sorry to hear your boyfriend sagged but we all do eventually.

No point in doing half a job. If front is bad the back soon will be

I did a complete redeck on my 20' Forester this past spring. Bought 5 sheets of 4x8 marine plywood at my local Menards for $69.99 per sheet (plus tax) and the complete carpet kit from Pontoon Stuff. I used the 20oz carpet kit which was another $300 after the 10% discount (give or take a dollar or two).

So all told I had just under $700 total in materials and about a week of evenings working on removing everything and putting it all back together. Hope that helps!

Off topic here, but that picture is a really pretty setting! It sounds like you are in for a project, but just look at that beautiful picture and it will likely inspire you to do what you need to do to keep boating. Where is that, anyway?

Woolznaz.....yea im at a full service marina that is tucked away. It has a campground feel to it. I like it.

Speaking of marina, talked to an owner. Said he would do the labor if I get supplies. Might take him up on it.
