#1 Post by 1roadking » Sat Jul 17, 2010 9:28 am

SO FAR 3 OF MY SNAPS HAVE BROKEN ON MY PLAYPEN COVER, ANY ONE ALSE HAVING THIS ISSUE? THEY ARE REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT STILL A HASSLE. I AM THINKING IT MIGHT BE A BAD RUN OF SNAPS. THEY BREAK AT SNAP ITSELF AND SO FAR HAVE NOT BEEN SNAPS UNDER A LOT OF TENSION. REALLY WEIRD!! NOT A BIG DEAL, BUT JUST WONDERING. THE REST OF THE BOAT IS GREAT. THANKS.

Did the snaps break or just pull loose from the canvas? Candle wax really helps free up the snaps, works good on the zippers also.
I also got a tool from west marine to remove the snaps, kind of pricy at about 20bucks but works well.

THEY BROKE. THEY DIDNT PULL THROUGH THE CANVAS, THEY PULLED APART AT THE RIVET JOING THE INNER AND OUTER PIECES OF THE SNAP. THEY WERE NOT OVERLY TIGHT ON THE BOAT AND DIDN'T FEEL LIKE THEY WERE BREAKING DO TO PRESSURE.

The snaps were probably not pressed in right. I'd call the dealer and have it replaced under warranty. Snap replacement kits are available at Boat US, etc. and come with an anvil kit. I keep one in the boat. Very easy to replace but since your boat is under warranty, I'd let the dealer fix it.

roadking - I've had to accept that snaps aren't gonna last forever and have learned to replace snaps myself, bought a good tool and buy snaps online in bulk. We snap/unsnap our cover each week at least and at least one snap will give it up...

I'm sure he is aware of this, but this is a brand new boat that he is speaking of.

I looked at one of these on Overtons and all reviews said the snaps were horrible. Wonder if they make the OEM for Bennington.

I have a 2275 /2010 and I complained that the cover was way to tight to the front but was going to live with it. The dealer told me they had others say the same thing and would try and get me a new cover. Bennington did not go for that but did send some material for the dealer to send out and have made a little bigger. What they did on the first try was to add about 6in front to back. I really did not have a problem snapping the sides and when I got it back it had more hieght in middle that can be adjusted by poles but did not fix the front. They sent it out again and they cut a piece of fabric and sort of put it in the front just above the existing front cover. The cover now goes on easy but one snap in front right did not line up just right. About an inch off so I just leave that snap undone. I was told that some of the new Benningtons coming in have now adjusted the cover just a few inches bigger. I would have liked a new cover but I feel the dealer did the best they could at that time. I can live with it after all it is just a cover. Maybe they can do something for you. Bill

I JUST TALKED TO THE SERVICE MNGR AT THE MARINA AND EXPLAINED THAT THE SNAPS ARE PUT ON AT BOAT FACTORY SO THEY CAN MATCHED TO THE BOAT. HE SAID SOMETIMES THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH BAD SNAPS RESULTING FROM THEM NOT BEING PRESSED PROPERLY. HE IS GOING TO ORDER A BUNCH OF SNAPS AND IN ABOT 2-3 WEEKS I AM GOING TO BRING THE COVER IN AND HAVE ALL THE BROKEN SNAPS FIXED AND HE WILL CHECK THE REST OF THE SNAPS FOR STRENGTH. NOT A BIG DEAL, BUT WANTED TO GIVE EVERYONE THE NET RESULT. AS FAR AS YOUR COVER NOT FITTING CORRECTLY, I WOULD NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING BUT A NEW PROPPER FITTING COVER.

Roadking1, Prior to them fixing mine I was looking at getting a custom cover made. They took care of 99% of the problem. My boat is in a covered. cradle type (hoists it out of water). All I need the cover for is to keep pollen or birds from making a mess. So for me it is not a big deal. Good luck with the snaps. Bill

My boat is brand new. We've literally had it out 2 weekends. Monday my son and I were snapping the (factory) cover on and realized two snaps have come off the boat itself! Already talked to the dealer and they said bring it on in, they will fix it, no charge. (Relief) Still aggravating though.

Bill, we've got a 2010 Bennington fishing barge, and so far no problems with the snaps on the playpen cover.. I also thought about a custom cover, that is until I priced them. Took the boat to two local shops, both gave me the same price, right around 2 grand ( give or take 200 bucks ) for a custom sunbrella cover that would come down over the railing and all the way down to the sides of the deck. 2 grand for a cover, not for me thank you.

Roland, I did not have a problem with the snaps. The cover was to tight or maybe just a few inches short. I just could not snap the front. Here is a little additional info. I wrote Bennington about this and they answered by sayin do front, then back then sides. Great if you are on trailer. Mine is on a lift with no access to walk around port side. So while in boat I do rear, port, Starboard walking on dock and then front. Everything is good now that they made the cover a little bigger. Bill

Bill -it's funny how different the method is among different makes. On ours we have to snap the back first and work our way towards the front, then go back in and insert the poles to get a good runoff slope. BTW, where on SML are you?
