Sorry to hijack my own thread, folks, but there's a certain brotherhood for those who ever sailed on a Great White Needle of Death.
That's why I almost always took pilothouse control...loved moving those levers myself! One time we were close alongside a chinese fishing boat with a couple hundred illegal immigrants aboard when a hose fitting blew in one side of the steering gear. All the hydraulic pressure was on one side of the rams and the rudders went to the stops towards the fishing boat! Without PH control, we would have run them over for sure. I had the deck and conn at the time and I was sure my shorts needed changing after that!!!
