Flag pole in mast light..safe?

#1 Post by CajunCoach23 » Thu Jul 21, 2016 6:20 am

Hi all.

I think I've seen flag poles that mount inside/to the mast light (white light). I would like to fly an American Flag, but am curious if the mast light is strong enough to support the additional drag that a flag would create.

Thanks!

I've been using the Anchor / Nav light pole with clips for our American flag since day 1 with this boat. So far, it's help up perfectly. The flag is about 12" X 16" or whatever the standard small size is. We've run the boat wide open ( 42 MPH ) to out run a thunderstorm a couple of times and both the flag and the pole are fine. The light pole is a thin aluminum tube and has an adjustment knob to allow it to be raised or lowered.

I use "TAYLOR MADE" Charlevoix Flag Clips to attach the flag to the aluminum light pole.

Thanks for reply! Do you know model number, and/or retailer?

Be sure you know the correct diameter of your aluminum light pole...... they make 2 sizes

I too, use same flag clips.. but, what I did, was to wrap a few layers of black electrical tape around light pole, before putting on the flag holder... that seems to make the flag clips "dig" into the tape a bit, reducing sliding, without damage to flag pole.

I've got the same Taylor clips from West. They worked just fine until I didn't take my flag down when I left the marina and let Old Glory flap away during a hellacious storm. The stress didn't help my anchor light mast. Loose at the base and it wiggles. Screws could never get it tight enough.

So, I got tired of the wiggly anchor light mast and I kneeded up some epoxy putty and set it around the base. It won't come off now, but it won't wiggle either. The screw/pivot still drops the mast and I use a small bungee on it when trailering.
