Best of luck Gramps.....I had a problem with 175 Mercury Optimax, I went back and forth with them for 3 yrs which is when my warranty expired, and get this, at the end of all this, they asked if I wanted to spend another $350.00 to extend the warranty. How's that for balls....I wound up selling the boat and taking a big hit on the motor. But, if you look at my signature, I have a mercury 115 4 stroke on the pontoon I bought last year. I had no choice, it was the company my dealer used, and it would have costed allot more if I wanted to switch, so I took the extended warranty and I'll hope for the best (so far no problems). Besides, a little stress in your life is good. Hope everything works out good for you.

Jimbo, At my age stress is the last thing that I need, LOL! It seems that a lot more people dislike Mercurys than other brands. My last motor, Yamaha, was flawless, I'm sorry that I bought onto the hype on the new motor.
2 motors and both have problems, doesn't score well for me.

Never was a big fan of Mercury outboards but I still think they make the best I/O's on the market bar non. Lots and lots of aftermarket replacement parts for cheap.

I know it must be frustrating as hell with what all you've already gone thru with that Merc.... but I kinda feel like some of the other here on the board... think it could be a dealer set up issue.... You gotta know that Mercury will be on the horn to your dealership to get this matter resolved.... Like I said, hang in there and give Mercury a chance to at least look into it.... Good luck!
Roland, I have no choice but to give the dealer a chance to fix it, Merc said they will help the dealer if the dealer asks for help. You would think after 2 new motors failing they would send someone down to the dealer and check the motor & the dealer out to see why they are failing, unless it's happening all over.

I can't believe that i'm the only one having problems with this new motor.
Sounds as if you have a screw up for a dealer. Probably has the mechanics that went to the marine mechanics school on late night TV.

"I talked to the new service guy and he said they would go over everything, he wasn't aware of all the stuff that I went thru on the 2 motors"

Can't keep staff through a season is pretty bad also. I'd look for a different dealer or see if there is a independent that is Merc certified to work on the motor. I know when I had my toon at Smith Mountain Lake the wrench turners there aren't worth dung, 80.00 p/h lazies.

Same issues with my ride, now disabled with locked up starter. Three tries to rebuild a holley carb at $90/hour is insane. Less than 2 hours running time this season!! My car mechanic told me "anyone that can fix engines works for a car business, and the screwups work on boats".

Gramps,

REALLY hate to hear you're having more problems and I do understand your frustration. Having a new boat and not being able to use it, especially when family is in town, has got to be the worst. As you know, I have the same motor, and I know my dealer has sold many more, as I have seen them on the lake. I am going to ask about any issues they have seen. Someone mentioned it earlier, but I don't understand why different props were giving you the same WOT.

I hope they are able to resolve your problem and get you back on the water quickly.

Good luck,

Roland, I think the props were giving me the same WOT was actually the cause of the motor. I'll find out when they get this thing fixed.

Sorry to hear about your trouble Gramps. This year we purchased a South Bay 525CR with the same engine, and we haven't had one bit of trouble (knock on wood). If fact, we just hit the 100 hour mark last weekend and it will get it's service this week.

Regarding the trim guage, we had the same trouble at the time of delivery where the trim guage didn't work, but I ended up buying the MercMonitor, and it works right out of the box. I just told my dealer to provide the analog harness to me when it comes in and not install it. I'll keep it in case I sell the boat and take the MercMonitor out. If you choose to go another dealer, they might be able to get the same harness setup for you, or your original dealer could mail it to you. Good luck either way!

Hopefully you get some good news from the dealer/Mercury soon. You need to be back on the water to make the stress disappear!
