Question, I have a 75 hp 4-S and want to change the oil this weekend. I have been using Merc oil all the time but now I am watching my wallet allot now. Is it ok to use other name brands such as Mobil ect... Also oil filters fram ect.....
Thanks !

I have a 90hp Yamaha 4s. I couldn't find a cross referenced oil filter, so I use factory filters, but I use castrol GTX for oil, and have not had a problem. IMHO, I would think that as long as you do it at regular intervals, your risk of problems diminishes.

Re: Oil Brand
I would think you would be fine as long as it has the same ratings. Check your manual to see what they require.
I have a 2 stroke and last year stopped using the Yamalube oil. It's now up to $35 A GALLON!!!! And that is for a synthetic blend. I get the full synthetic penzoil at Menard's for $23.

Re: Oil Brand
It's not the brand but the spec's on the bottle that count. Advertising can mess with your mind, so stick to spec's! I doubt you can find other than manufacturers spec's on the oil to use in the manual for your engine! Yes they will recommend there brand but as long as it meets there requirements, spec wise your good to go. That's my 2 cents worth after 55 years in the automotive service business.

Re: Oil Brand
The man-well does tell me what to look for when getting oil so that to me tells me it is ok to use (car) oil as long as it meets the calling. As far as the filter goes if there is no cross the West Marine here has them for 12.99 still a rip off but need it.

Re: Oil Brand
If you have a NAPA store near you they are great at cross referencing filters of lawn tractors, etc. I'll bet they can come up with something and their NAPA Gold filter are very good.

Re: Oil Brand
I dont know if you have a Autozone but last night I they were able to cross over the oil filter to a Fram or a STP filter. Thanks for all your inputexospex wrote:I have a 90hp Yamaha 4s.
