Drain plug holes

Hey all,

Im in the middle of my rebuild and i've been searching for new drain plugs. Well I found the old nylon plastic ones but wanted new ones. So I went and picked up some 1/2" brass plugs only to get home and find out they weren't fitting. A closer look revealed the threads are pretty much crushed. It was weird because the old nylon one screwed right in. My questions: Has any one tried to rethread the drain hole? Would the rubber drain plugs work in this situation?

I would have to think a pipe tap would be fine. worst case scenario, use Teflon tape also. JT

Just to clarify, the threads in the drain hole are crushed.

Never had to re thread, but you don't want to use brass in contact with aluminum. The two metals are going to react, making the threads worse and cause severe corrosion.
Last boat I restored, the PO had used brass hardware, what a nightmare.

Use nylon, aluminum or stainless. Brass drain plugs (with the rubber seal) last a couple of seasons before they corrode apart.

Are you sure the threads are "crushed" ? Seems odd if the plugs were nylon. Perhaps its a diff thread pitch?

I'm positive. The nylon threads are pretty bad as well. Same thread pitch on both the nylon and brass plug.
