Having problems with my power trim???

#1 Post by schmir » Mon Jul 27, 2009 6:26 am

My power trim seems to be failing. It still works in the sense that I can raise the motor up and down but it will fall back to full trim down. This happens while underway or at rest. It takes about 2-3 minutes for it to fall all the way back down. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

my limited knowlage says its a leak INside the pump, bad seals, could be rebuilt reasonably cheap id say, but im cheap so i would find the lowest setting that the boat runs/planes out at and id put the rod in the holes that stops the motor from going down any farther, this will keep the motor from tilting all the way down but still can rais it all the way up for shallow water or trailering

just my cheap 2 cents :)

I guess it would depend on the trim unit but on my old boat a 1979 starcraft with a 140 Johnson. I had the same problem but to fix is easy to get to it was a pain in the ass. the only reason that is because it was on the front side of the rim unit. Toward the boat. There are 2 one way valves one for going up and one for going down now if yours is the same or if they haven't changed much over the years i would replace both of the valves. Because as soon as you replace one the other will more than likely go out. That is all I can think of.

Well, I had a guy that works on outboards take a look at my trim. He said he couldn't find any leaks or anything like that. He opened up the screw that was on the side and some air came out. Said there should not have been air in there but I don't know how it got in. He tighted screw and trim seems to work now. At least on land. Hope he is right but I'll give it a real test in the water soon.

Was the reservior low ? If so, air can get in the lines that way. It has to be very low for that to happen though.

I don't think so. The guy didn't say anything about it being low or needing to refill.

if their was air wen you would try and use the power trim the motor should wine louder than normal and you would hear a gurgling sound. if that is the case makesure yoiu fill the tim unit up cause its low.
