Cleaning Pontoons

#1 Post by lulupalooza06 » Fri Mar 18, 2016 3:42 am

I hope hubs didn't screw up, but he attempted to clean the pontoons yesterday. Nothing worked, guy at Cabelas said to use AC coil cleaner, he did. Although it didn't work UNTIL he used a scrubber pad! I don't think they have ever been cleaned before, had a lot of oxidation and the ugliest orange water line. Well, with the coil cleaner and the scrub pad, there are scratches on the pontoon. What do we do! :donno I dont' want him touching it now!

Thinking of getting some extra fine sandpaper and going over the pontoon, polishing and buffing and seal with that Sharkskin stuff. Thoughts?

My boat stays wet year round in fresh water so it is going to get growth and stain. I will pull it once a year to power wash the growth off the toons... I am not going to go down the labor intensive line of polishing the toons when I can and would rather be on the water enjoying myself... Bottom line is how much does the scratching bother the two of you? I keep green scrub pads in the boat and have used them while we are swimming to give the bottom a "lick and a promise"

My boats hang in a boathouse on a rack, and that's why my last pontoon still looked good at 28 years old. I look at keeping them out of the water as taking care of a long term in investment.

And I polish my toon with a Porter Cable dual action sander/polisher with a wool 6" bonnet. White Diamond metal polish gives me a very nice shine every June, and I've got it down to a 90 minute job.

Using lacquer cleaner to clean off the black aluminum oxide is far too hard of a job. It's just easier to polish the boat yearly once.
