How to wash a mooring cover??

Several years back, I had my Bimini cover dive bombed by gulls. They almost made my black cover completely white. My dealer told me to remove the cover, soak it with a solution of Tide laundry detergent, let it sit for 20 m, and the pressure wash it. It worked great. So do the gull sweeps that I put up. Haven't had to do it again.
