Considering adding a fish/depth finder to our boat.
We don't fish much, but it could also act as a speedometer, as the vacuum tube ones don't see to hold up very well.
Would also be nice to know depth. We only take our boat on Deep Creek lake, MD. Which is a freshwater lake, I think the max depth is 60 feet by the dam.
Would this one work? We would have to mount a transducer? Where to? how does that work?

Sorry, I probably seem ridiculous with the questions, but I have zero experience with fish finders.
Thanks
Melanie

Re: inexpensive fish/depthfinder speedo
Having a GPS/Depth Gauge/Fish Finder is a good thing.
I've had a bunch of Garmins for vehicles and they work great.
Just make sure it comes with "Updates For Life" if that's available on a non-automobile Garmin.
The transducer is connected via a cable to the unit. On my toon, it's run down through the decking and then along the channel aluminum back to the rear of the starboard pontoon and the transducer is mounted to the aluminum bracket on the rear of the toon.
Having the depth finding function is great.
Also having a "Waypoint" function is good to have. It helps you find your way back to anywhere you've been if needed.
ETA: I read through and noticed it doesn't have "Charts". So disregard the "Updates For Life".

Re: inexpensive fish/depthfinder speedo
Thanks for surfacing this Garmin. It has chirp technology, GPS with speed, ability to set waypoints, review history and is color. I actually ordered it tonight after doing a little research. Seems to have very good reviews. Thanks for the link!Mel85CJ wrote:Considering adding a fish/depth finder to our boat.

Like on the transom? I attached a picture of what the back of our boat looks like (minus the engine, it is a picture of when we re-did the transom).... Does it go on that, or just on the last deck crossmember, I assume it has to be in the water? It bolts on?NonHyphenAmerican wrote: The transducer is connected via a cable to the unit. .
Thank you for your help. In regard to the maps, our boat is on Deep Creek Lake, MD, which isn't such a big lake (3900 acres) that we don't know where we are at, plus we keep a fishing map of the lake in the boat.
