Installing a water separator
Hey all,
I'm looking to install a water separating fuel filter on my toon and need some advise:
I have a 225 suzuki and my gas tank is topside, port side. The fuel line of course is at the bottom of the tank and runs through the aluminum to the motor area.
1. Should I mount it above the deck where the fuel like will go up before going down to the primer bulb
2. Should I mount it at deck level at the top of the splash well so the fuel line goes down, but the filter is close to the water and might get wet
My concern is creating a siphon/no fuel situation mounting it high, or water intrusion to the filter if I mount it low.
Any thoughts??

Mine is located just on the portside of the OB by the splashwell, about deck level. No problems where it is located at all. Actually it's very easy to change when the boat is on the trailer. Sure it probably gets wet but they have a seal just like an oil filter. No water gets in.

Re: Installing a water separator
Heck on currently made Sun Trackers the fuel tank is in the motor pod which is hung under the boat. The motor pod is an open ended canoe, thus the tank is IN the water anytime the boat is IN the water. Many times while underway there is water rushing over the top of the tank and there is no water intrusion.ralph wrote:Mine is located just on the portside of the OB by the splashwell, about deck level. Mount the filter unit where it is easy to servise...

agree. also, don't forget to oil the seals before you install. helps a ton when changing the filter.teecro wrote:Mount the filter unit where it is easy to servise...

Re: Installing a water separator
Thanks guys. I will fabricate a mount to keep I just above deck level by the splash well. I appreciate the feedback

Re: Installing a water separator
Here's a pic of mine on the Premier. I have an open transom, with fuel tank mounted in it. Like Teecro says, no issues at all!

Re: Installing a water separator
That's where I wanted to put mine, but was concerned about the 'lift' for the fuel pump. Looks like it's not going to be an issue!!!
Thanks Bryden24shp!!
