Can fenders/bumpers be too big?

I don't know where you are located but many hardware stores around here like ACE or mom and pop places buy their outdoor gear from Elliott Brothers. Sometimes you can get a pretty good price from them if they are ordering them and they don't normally stock them.

I have a friend that is able to buy from them and I have gotten a couple of things through him, but they don't (as I understand) sell retail.

You're correct my spelling was wrong. They do not sell direct to consumers but if you order something through a local hardware store that orders from then the hardware store often gives you a pretty good deal, at least the ACE hardware I've gone through and lake murray hardware do. They often will be pretty close to the online pricing.

Being a little on the oddball bent, I use four huge (10") fenders on each side. They stay permanently overboard, unless one of them drags and splashes someone. One 'side' is set higher than the other, in order to accommodate taller docks and larger boats in raft ups.
Although it looks a bit sloppy, my friends with boats love it. They say that my boat always looks 'inviting' to tie to.

Does anyone use these types of fenders? If so, do they work well?
I'm looking for something that will be removed when not in use. Main use will be tying up to another boat.
Reviews I' reading are mainly complaining about not staying put while moving, which as I said isn't a concern for me.

What kind of knot do you fellas use to tie the rope to the eye of the fender?
I bought 4 new ones and am trying to decide how to attach the rope...
While it looks nice...I think an eye splice is over my head...

no knot used, usually a loop through one end.

I use this kind of fender with the hole through the middle. I tie a granny knot in one end of the line, thread it through the fender and tie another knot on top of the fender. This traps the fender between the knots.

Don't worry for the most part an eye splice is over most everyone's head... This coming from someone working on ships and boats for over 30 odd years...

Myself I prefer to use braided ropes on my pontoon so splicing an eye is not even possible. For securing the boat to the dock I use higher grade 1/2" braided lines with 3/8" lines in reserve. But when it some to fenders I prefer to purchase pre-made whip or fender lines again in 3/8" each with an eye sewn into the end; they generally cost about 6 bucks for a pair. I also tend to select my fendering a little differently than most. Since by nature of the truth my boat spends over 2/3 of its life moored to the same spot, thus I've got three fenders that are 6" x 22" that stay secured to the dock itself. And 4 smaller fenders one on each corner that are 5" x 18" these are tied at the height they would most likely be used and secured to the rails via rubber coated twist tie until needed...
