Impeller Change

#1 Post by TDJ2591 » Tue Jun 28, 2016 4:03 pm

I was asked this question but did not know the correct answer.

In general, at what point should the impeller be changed? I realize that water condition (dirty, shallow sandy, salt, ec.) might affect its life. Is there a rule of thumb based on perhaps hours, passage of time, etc.? I recall a factory motor rep at a boat show saying to change it every other year but wouldn't it depend on usage?

I had mine changed last year as I had no idea if the PO had ever changed it. It needed chamging as the blades had all taken a curved set and it was starting to deteriorate (resembled dry rot cracking).

New mercury four stroke manual recommends checking every 300 hours or three years. If your are going to the effort to check it might as well replace it.

It all depends on the quality of the water and the hours the motor's used. My Yamaha impellers seem to last longer than others.

I'm on a deep rock bottom lake with good quality water, and I've not changed them that often in the past--maybe every 5 years. But my impeller only costs $28 and I can do the job myself. I see no reason to get the whole kit since I'm careful removing the gaskets and parts.

I really need to change the impeller more often. When I get to 100 hours, I might have 7-8 years on the motor.
