no more splashing gas

#1 Post by curtiscapk » Tue Aug 23, 2016 6:43 am

My 20 year old 5 gal can finally bit the dust. I hate the new gas cans splashing gas all over safer for the environment my ass! I remember a video Loyd posted on this as well. I "fixed" my brand new 5 gal can with a tire valve stem. I didn't have my shrader valve tool so used a mini screwdriver. I think the pics speak for themselves.

Nice idea. I never thought about an air valve. I see they make spout replacement kits (with vent) for older cans. I have been told they also fit on some newer non-metal cans. I think they're about $10. And maybe $8 on sale.

Not sure what would happen to someone if they used this on the newer cans and had an accident...

Man, did you ever do it the hard way! Search eBay for "gas can vent caps". I bought some off eBay and added the vent caps to 8 plastic, un-vented gas cans. You simply drill a 1/2" hole, make sure you get out any plastic shavings from drilling, and pop in the vent cap. It takes less than a minute.

After having the same 4 for 30 years, I bought 6 new ones after some prick stole the others last year, 2 already leak at the seam and they all SUCK. I just remove the top and use a huge funnel for my generator.

Bought? Bought off fleabay?

Hurumph. Went to my local tire store, got the stems for free. Then drove to our local thrift store to get some metal hangers - free. My cost? Nada. Ya can't count the gas, as the trip was combined with running errands to the big city (population 421) to get other stuff.

What happens at the lake stays at the lake. Unless I have my camera handy.

This is what I use now. Just put the 5 gal. tank on the deck and use the shake pump to transfer into the boat. No more lifting and holding the can.

Curtis, it looks like your can has a tail. I bet your creative daughter could pull out the spout and decorate that can into some type of animal mascot for the Floater.

GBanger, where did you get your tubing? I saw one at Academy Sports but it looked like a smaller diameter (1/2" maybe). Someone was selling a 3/4" model at a boat show but I didn't want it badly enough to pay him $20

Yep it took me at least a 2 minutes to do this at a cost of around a dollar to do it with the stem. Works great Loyd!

Craig,
I used that tire valve idea awhile back. Seems good. Only problem I've found is that gasoline will deteriorate the rubber and pressure changes from heating and cooling will eventually pop out or suck in the valve stem. If it happens while transporting, could be dangerous.

If you want real cans try

or

or do a search for
metal railroad approved gas cans

I did the valve stem trick when those damn jugs came out. 3 still have the stems, one did break off. I hate those leaky new style SOB's. Hell, we put more fumes into the air when filling them at the gas station than they ever leak out when storing them with fuel in them. Thanks EPA!
Congrats on the last daughter to leave the nest! Its hard, but hey Craig.... They always come back. Usually at the worst possible times. :devillol
