Wet boat....inside

#1 Post by katieclooney » Thu Aug 25, 2016 6:20 pm

Went to look at the boat today after some bad weather and i noticed i have a wet spot that is large by the bow and runs all the way to the back door. My cover is on and snapped. Its not coming from under the boat so I am a bit perplexed as to what is going on. There was no pooling on the cover and all three poles were erect.

Any suggestions?

you can water-proof treat the cover - in heavy rain some water will drip in.

It's ok for it to get wet in there; as long as there is some airflow so you don't get mold/mildew when it's drying.

Acrylic woven canvas (say sunbrella) is a woven tight weave fabric. It gets its water repellency from a chemical treatment and eventually the treatment will loose effectiveness (say about 3 years or so). Scrubbing during cleaning or using detergents for cleaning the canvas will lead to a quicker failure. This can be cured by treating the canvas.

Do not use a waterproofing treatment that contains silicone on acrylic woven canvas. Factory waterproofing treatment is fluorocarbon based and will repel the silicone and make you have patchy coverage when treating. Not to mention the silicone can compromise stain resistance of the fabric. The best treatment for acrylic canvas has a fluoropolymer base.

Edit to say
303 High Tech Fabric Guard mentioned above is an advanced fluoropolymer fabric treatment.

Thanks all!

Called and she is not a weatherproof cover. They are breathable so that it doesnt trap the water.
The rain we had was for a few days straight and a solid downpour. They recommended the 303 as well, however that it will then trap the moisture. So I am up in the air if i am going to waterproof it.

I did open up the boat and she is all dried out. Just odd that it got as wet as it did. :?
