Depth finder recommendations

#1 Post by Jayjoans » Mon Apr 03, 2017 10:30 am

Just purchased our first pontoon boat, and I'd like to install a depth finder. We don't fish, so all I'm looking for is depth. I've come to rely on it coming from an inboard with a fixed prop under the boat, I don't know how much I'll need it on the pontoon, but it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside to know what's under me.

I have the mounting box welded to the back of my port pontoon, so I'm interested in any product and/or installation tips you would be willing to share.

Your going to get lots of options on this one. I use the Lowrance Hook 4. They dropped the price recently to $199.00 so it's a pretty good deal. It gives you speed, GPS tracking, depth, water temperature and probably a few other things I just don't use or know what to do with. Good luck w/ whatever you choose.

Thanks for the recommendation. I looked up the Lowrance unit and I'd prefer something smaller that I can just mount in the dash rather than mount on top of the dash.

Any smaller units come to mind?

Faria gauges. These came standard on my Harris. Is this what you're looking for?

I installed a Faria with water & air temp in my previous boat. I loved it. It was easy to install and was wired to light up when I turned on the running lights. I liked it better than the factory one that came on my new boat. I think I paid around $150-170 for it.

Here is one from great lakes skipper. You can search here for OEM parts and they may have the exact one that they would have installed.

Funny, Overton's was bought by Gander Mountain, in 2007, and now Gander Mountain is looking pretty sketchy.

Thanks everybody, I bought the Faria from Overton's before their 15% off and free shipping expired tonight.

I tried to contact Great Lakes Skipper, but nobody ever replied. That's an interesting site, but I didn't see my exact gauge style on there.

I appreciate the help.

Yeah, I hope Overton's survives.
