Need advice on what motor to go with.

#1 Post by Renegade » Fri Aug 25, 2017 8:22 pm

In an earlier post I said that I was ordering a new South Bay but after the quote came back I am going back to Bennington. Anyways, the model that I'm dealing on (24' swingback) with sps pkg. (full center toon). It has an Evinrude etec 150hp (gen 1). I swore I wouldn't go back to 2 stroke after my last 2005 115hp Optimax but I have heard a lot of good things about the etecs. Now there is the gen 2 model out which is supposed to have more torque and better fuel efficiency than the gen 1. So what's your pick? Gen 1, Gen 2, or 4 stroke?? I can't decide.

I have the new G2 HO 150 on my Tritoon. The low end torque is better than any 4 stroke. Its actually very quiet. Its not much louder than any of the 150 or 300 Yamaha's I had. Its got that throaty sound to it. It has no smoke at all. Oil tank is built into the motor. The power steering is awesome to. It comes standard with digital throttle which isn't a choice with a 150 Yamaha. I paid almost the same as a 150 Yamaha. I got the 10 year warranty. Hard to beat that. Fuel Economy is amazing over 4000 rpms. The faster I go the better the MPG. I get over 3 mpg's over 4000 rpms all the way to 5700 rpms.

Honestly I would get the best deal possible. They all make great motors. The bad thing about a G1 is the oil tank isn't on the motor. That would be a deal killer for me. I have had good luck with Yamaha before. But I wanted something different. Aslong as you have a good dealer I would buy what you like and get the best deal on. The Merc 150 is a great motor. Probably be the cheapest.

The 10 year warranty would probably help sway me but unfortunately they aren't offering it anymore. Just the standard 5 year.
Any guesses for speed with that set up? I was thinking 35 ish. What do you guys think? I'm adding sea legs which will drop the speed some.

It's the sps hull with 3 25" tubes. It's max rating is 200hp.

The G2 150 hp appears to be a fine motor for a pontoon, however the best.prices will be when a boat manufacturer obtains it on a fleet purchase. That means the dealer will need to be an authorized Evinrude dealer.

Due to the G2 engines being relative new, it takes a dealer in close proximity to service them. We simply don't have any Evinrude dealer around selling Benningtons.

If you have a Bennie G2 dealer, go for it.

Thanks for the replies. I did more reading up on the gen 2 and it all sounds impressive but for me there seems to be a bit more peace of mind with the 4 stroke. Probably just me though.

Guys over on "The Hull Truth" seem to love the G2's, not many issues so far except for a power steering failure which didn't allow him to manually turn the motor when it went. I've had bad experiences with BRP warranty on there other products (ATV and Snowmobile) in the past so they are personally on my bad last.

Where you get the best deal on boat and motor is what I would go with. All motors will provide the samething. I get 42 MPH with my 22 Mantiou triton with the SHP package. That's full fuel and 3 people. The motor is to low and I need to go down 1 pitch. So I'm pretty sure I can get more out of it.

I know Oct and Nov is when Yamaha usually runs their extra 2 or 3 years of warranty for free. They all kinda run those promo's in the off season and around boat shows in Feb and March.

Any 150 should get you mid to upper 30's on a 24 foot 3 tuber.
