Please Consider Joining "Packing it Out"

#1 Post by Bamby » Sun May 09, 2010 12:44 pm

I bet everyone here has went to their favorite fishing hole, sandbar, or hangout and found a bunch of trash spread around. I don't know why anyone would make such a mess and just lazily leave it there, but people do.

My Dad taught me to always leave an area cleaner than you found it, to make up for those select few who insist on making such a mess. It only takes a few to make us all look bad, and we've all seen it, empty liver tubs, old fishing line, beer bottles or soda cans, & just about anything else you can imagine.

Since we can't stop those so called "fisherman" or "other boaters" from trashing our Lakes & Rivers, we don't have to let them make all of us look bad. So when you go out, always leave the place cleaner than you found it "by packing it out". If we were to all join in on this movement "we could set an example and make a real statement".

I been doing that for 40 years, taught young if if it came with me it leaves with me, then we always brought trash bags with us as we figure we will be cleaning some one else's mess before we can use the site.

But we always leave it like it should be.

So I'm all for it

As an assistant scoutmaster... "Leave No Trace" is fairly well engrained into our family. We usually leave everywhere better that we find it. We seem to use our fishing net more for pop bottles than for fish..

Fishing net jousting is a good game to keep the girl entertained for a short while though. Set her up by the gate in front of me with a net and we'll go around the cove (or wherever) and snag some floating stuff.

I've always cleaned my messes, but could do a little more to pick up the slack for all the other dumb asses. After reading your post I will try and take an extra trash bag to help the cause. :thumbsup
It has always amazed me to see even responsible looking people leave their spot trashed. :x

It never ceases to amaze me how some idiots can leave so much trash. We always "leave nothing but footprints, and take nothing but pictures". We always pick up someone else's trash too. It's not hard to take your trash back with you.

I'm a big proponent of this. Whether in the city, in the mountains, or on the lake, no need to litter. I HATE littering, and I immdediately lose respect for someone when I see them toss trash on the ground.

It has nothing to do with environmentalism, being green, or whatever else... it's just about having respect.

Good idea, Bamby.

One of the things my Dad taught us kids was to clean up anything we see at wherever he'd take us fishing or camping. We had a problem at a local pond where a few dumb asses were dumping trash. I'd go down and clean it up and the nearest property owner kept an eye out as well. He owned part of the access to the lake and was kind enough to allow fisherman to trespass to fish the lake. It got to the point where he was going to put up no trespassing signs, but all of a sudden the dumping stopped. :donno :paranoid

Here in NE Oklahoma the Cherokee's are the nastiest bunch next to the Mexicans and just white trash. On lake we could fill the boat 3 or 4 times a day on holiday weekend. The boat ramps and swimming areas are awash in pampers left behind along with the beer cans and other garbage. We try to pick up as much as we can but just don't have time. One good thing is we find some good stuff. Last year we found a new ski vest that was over a hundred bucks in Overtons. Fits my Grandson perfect.
