Okay buddy, here's what I would do.

Like you , I don't have a boat load of coins to play with, so I would seriously consider getting the used one, that will bolt right up. With that, go ahead and change the water pump, obviously, and bolt her up with new fluids. The reason I would go this route is this. Your boat isn't new ( like mine isn't ) and there isn't anything else on there that's under warranty. So save yourself the $450 - water pump, and go used. To me, the warranty of the new, or even yours with new parts, isn't worth that extra money. Again, this is what I would do, being fairly mechanically inclined, and knowing that I may get a good 2 years out of it, then possibly have to look elsewhere. Then again, you might get another 10 out of it, and the engine blows, you look to upgrade, or you sell the toon al together. Either way, I see it as going used, and having fun this year.

Of course if the used lower unit takes a crap on you mid-season, I'll have to eat my words of advice, but that's the chance / price we pay to play.

I put a used LU on a 115 hp Merc I had back in the day...and I could never get the shift linkage synced up right afterward. Ended up with reverse, at idle...but that's all. But at least it went forward still.

The original one must have had water in the gear oil and froze up and broke the case over the winter. (I was 18, what's that about young and dumb).

Anyway, I'd be more inclined to put new parts in the old case (that I'm positive will fit and work correctly) and make sure it's right before taking a gamble on a used LU that could crap out next week.

But that's just me. I completely understand the money concerns though.

Is the seller of the used LU close by at all, or will it have to be shipped?

Since my question he upped the buy it now by 25. to 675, no bids yet at 500 start, ends Sunday.

If your mechanic is good, I think I would go for the rebuild. You will have a new water pump, that you would have to replace on the used one and you know you are starting with new seals. The only wild card at that point is the condition of the shafts. You can get a free look at the drive shaft by pulling the water pump base, 4 more bolts from doing a water pump. Then you can see the shaft sealing surface. Be sure it is not worn or he seal won't last long.
They do make something called a "speedy sleeve" that will repair a worn shaft but I am not sure how long it will last.

Well I just won the lower unit for 500 plus 40 shipping. The old one eneded up being toast at some point it got so hot it practically welded the pinion gear to the drive shaft. The Mechanic had two guys on a breaker bar and almost broke it!

He said it could been like that for a long time and just finally wore out. :donno

We see how the new one does. I do have a much better understanding of LU's now :smoke

I can take pictures of the guts if anyone wants to see them. My plan was to sell the casing but since the nut won't come off no can do.

So let's see if'n I get this right - Your engine crapped out so the you and the family find a forest clearing to go out get a little sun? The only thing that I see that is missin' is everyone is supposed to be wearing unlaced boots with the shorts.

Sorry, nice family, but to me the photo looks really weird.

Re: Lower unit off time to order the new one ( UPDATE)

#29 Post by curtiscapk » Thu May 12, 2011 1:47 pm

Well we got the lower unit on, it matched up perfectly. Shifts great forward and reverse. However no water pressure! :x I couldn't spend a lot of time on it. Do to the funeral. After we got home I realized I may have put the impeller going wrong direction. Most online research said they would flip on their own. Anyone experienced this. The housing wasnt new, on the l-u but the impeller was. When I go back down this is my plan.
1. Shoot water up powerhead to see if clogged. (already checked from pisser to block)
2. Hook up muffs to lower unit unbolted from powerhead, to see if water even reaching pump housing.
3. Put the original housing and impeller that I knew was working on just to see.
4. Sink the fucker

what do you guys think.

Are you talking about overheating on the gauge/beeper going off or just no water from the pee hole?

There is a collar between the output of the water pump to the pipe going up. Did you lose that?
The impeller will fix itself (go the right way) so that is not your problem. Do you have the bottom plate installed correctly in the water pump can? The holes are staggered so it is hard to screw that up but you do need the plate.

One trick is to take out the thermostat and shoot water back through the hole to see if it is coming out of the tube (no dirt daubber nests etc)
Make an adapter out of the end of a swim noodle. You kid won't miss a couple inches.
