Trolling Motor

#1 Post by montuckysean » Thu Jun 16, 2011 6:43 pm

I have an 18 foot Bass Buggy, I wan to put a bow mount trolling motor. What will get the job done? I just want to troll around on a medium size lake (Georgetown Lake MT) for trout. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Here's my two cents worth (I'll be in Montana next week and you can pay up then!). Because of the large profile that even a small pontoon like you're 18 footer presents, I'd get no less than 70# of thrust and a 24 VDC setup.
Since you said you'd be trolling, I'm assuming you are using something like downriggers for lake trout? You don't want to be fighting the wind all the time. Also look into the remote controls for the newer units. You can sit in the captains chair and control the trolling motor. All you have to do is put it down in the water and take it out.
I have a MinnKota with 74# of thrust on my bass boat and I very seldom have to turn it past 30-40% power, but toons sit so far above the water and have the sides to present to the wind.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info! I was looking at the 24 volt systems w/ at least 70lb of thrust. The only problem is their cost, I was looking for some other input to see if I could get by with the cheaper 12 volts with 45lb of thrust. You have confirmed my thoughts as I don't want to get a unit and not be happy with it, I will just need to watch my spending and save up! Hope you have a great time in MT!

The wind will blow you sideways in any pontoon boat. They're like having a sail.

Go for a 70#+ trolling motor.
